100% situational awareness is a key element of good a motorcyclist. I also believe those of us who got our start in the dirt have developed riding abilities beyond those who have been on pavement only.
Hanging up my helmet. Been riding since 1973 and still have lots of confidence in my riding ability, but the cagers are scaring me more and more. Cell phones causing more accidents nowadays than drunk drivers ... but at least most drunk driving occurs at night when I'm usually not riding...

I mount and balance my own using a NoMar changer. Learned how to do it after finding a paid-for service did a half-@$$ job at balancing. Not needing to make a profit, I can take my time and get it spot on. I also do tires for friends and coworkers.
KLR650? I bought a used '95 in 2004 with only 6K miles on it. Rode it for 2 years before moving on to a full-fledged street bike. Grew up on dirt bikes starting with a new '73 Yamaha 175 on/off road bike ... and that one was only $695 off the showroom floor. Was somewhat disappointed that...
Purdy GW. I'm really liking the new GW ... or as some call it, the ST1800.

You sound like you understand the forces in play. That's good. Without describing various types of specialized saw cuts, can you attach a rope and pull/winch it over to where the branches are no longer supporting the weight?
Didn't give me time to chime in! Just found this thread. ;) What I'm curious about is can you really use a 0.375" tip with a 0.325" pitch chain as indicated in post #2?
The tip needs to be replaced and $22 (plus S&H?) is the cost. So in effect, the new bar really only costs $38 (plus S&H). No fuss, fresh rails, no clogged oil holes, pretty paint, zero miles, etc.
