    Climbing a bowed / bending spar ?

I did this oak leaner this week that had a big crack in it half way up from the last snow fall. I used a tall tree near by to set my climbing line in so I could leverage my self at an angle and almost walk up the side of the tree. We then spanned rigged the large heavy branches between two...

    Lost retainer clip

Im putting a hyway 52mm cylinders kit with pop up piston on my Stihl 461. I lost one of the retainer clips for the piston pin.( It went flying) Can I use any clip that fits? Or does it have to be the kind and size of the one I lost. Auto zone has a big selection. Would a snap ring work ?

Bucket on bucket truck not leval.

I grounded the bucket at work and it scraped the ground kind of hard and now is tilted forward. The self leveling still works but it's not straight up and down anymore..something slipped. Is there a way to readjust it.?

    I hate this clamp

I was giving a 028 wood boss. The piston and cylinder was toast.. I ordered a new top end off eBay and put it on the saw. I can not for the life of me get the clamp on the boot that connects carb to cylinder. It's driving me crazy. I had the same problem on my 461 I replaced the top end on. On...

    homemade 3 strand flipline

40 years ago when I started climbing we made our own flip lines from 3 strand.. there's an easy way to put cable in the rope. Flipping up big pines 60,70 DBH was easier with a 22' , 1 inch three strand rope. You could really flip those suckers. An eye splice and a crown knot is as strong as any...

Not using a base gasket on barrel.

I'm replacing the piston on my461 Stihl with a pop up piston, would it be feasible to leave off the barrel gasket to further raise compression? I'm going to add an after market muffler mod also. This saw gets used a lot.

    Loggers & climbers

One major difference I think between a climber and a feller is an Arborist will almost always have a rope in the tree, where loggers do some incredible stuff using wedges and special cuts free falling trees. Rarely is a logger working around structures. If you can drop a top throu a small...

[Palm Experts!!] Have a Palm to remove, but can't just drop it where it wants, and afraid trunk is too-weak to rig from...need advice!!

You have several options I see. First and safest, just chunk it down in easily handled prices like Mike suggested. You could rig it out useing the fishing pole technic, use several pulleys spaced a few foot apart from each other the length of the trunk ending with your safe block. This...

    461 skirt on piston broke?

Im replacing the piston on my Stihl 461. I'm going to replace it with a pop up piston. Lucky for me the cylinder isn't scored. But why would it break in the first place?

    Tree pushing

This technique is frowned upon in the logging industry. It can sometimes be useful when you have a dangerous snag, or hazardous tree situation. You’ll still need to do a face cut and back cut on the snag. The down side is if for some reason the first tree doesn’t push the other one over. Now...

    Sick Oak Tree. Please Help

If the tree is still standing I would carefully dig around the roots and probe with ice pick for rot and decay. Have you observed any mushrooms or conks growing around the trunk. Look for white strings in the soil and on the roots as you lightly excavate and inspect the roots. And remove that...

    Leaves turning white

I am stumped on why these leave on a 10 year old red grapefruit tree would be turning white. I first thought sunsculd, but it’s pretty uniform around the tree, or an iron deficiency. But there would be other lives showing signs of it. Plus the tree is giving a solvable iron periodically as...

    Raised grade on oaks.

I’ve been running across a large number of mature Oaks in distress from grade changes during construction. These homes are 5 to 10 year old and the damage is manifesting in many ways. My question is ,is it possible to Attempt to help these trees by removing soil around tree bases, exposing Root...

maximum possible re-direct when felling a leaner

The height of the tree has a impact if it’s a tall tree. A short spar at 30 degrees isn’t the same as a 100 footer at 30%. There’s techniques such as side roping that’ll helps A leaner fall 30degrees against the lean. There’s cuts though frowned upon, that’ll help, Dutchmen, triple notch etc...

    lifespan of a climber

Wow this thread still going. I replied to it when I was 54. I’m 62 now, I’m lead climber for a small company in No. Calif. I climb5 to 6 days a week. Though I’m really tired sometimes after a big removal , I have less problems then climbers a 1/3 my age. I had to get a 461 because a 661 is...
