Looking to get a new splitter

If cycle time is important have you looked at SuperSplit? I know they are not cheap but they are well built and fast.

    Treating Invasives with Herbicide

Are you planning on broadcast spraying or spot treating stumps individually? Fall is a great time to spot treat, as stated above the trees are putting energy into the roots so they really absorb the herbicide. Triclopyr and Tordon work great (I really like Triclopyr with diesel for basal bark...

    Is this Siberian Elm

I read mixed reviews on Siberian Elm as firewood, I lean slightly towards the "if it's wood burn it" mentality so I'd like to try burning it. It seems that one of the biggest complaints is getting it to dry and not having to buck and split it when it's soaking wet. My plan is to girdle a few...

    Calcified wood ash?

    So do you get “clinkers”?

    Calcified wood ash?

I have no experience with Locus. It certainly could be, I know there are some Honey Locus and a few Black around. I just assumed this was Red Elm because I helped take down a massive Red Elm in the same park as this one and the wood had a similar look and smell. I add some of my ash to the...

    Calcified wood ash?

Anyone experienced hard, calcified ash chunks when cleaning out their wood stove/furnace? I normally burn Ash, Hackberry and a little Burr Oak but I recently came into what I think is Red Elm that was dead and had just fallen over. It was dry (19%) so I’ve been burning it. I normally get the...

    Is this Siberian Elm

Thank you for the replies. I'll add this to the list of noxious weeds I've been trying to eradicate on my farm -Common Burdock -Buckthorn -Dame's Rocket -Canada and Sow Thistle -Wild Parsnip is spreading and is only a few miles away so I'm sure I'll get to add that soon.

    Is this Siberian Elm

So next question is how big of a problem is it? I’m not I big fan of non-native aggressive species. It looks like my grandpa planted it as a windbreak along the outer edge of the grove. They are North and West facing and are shaded by mature Hackberry, Ash and Silver Maple trees so even though...

    Is this Siberian Elm

I’m pretty sure this is Siberian Elm but I’d like some other opinions to confirm. Smooth seeds, not hairy like American Elm. Fairly symmetrical leaves. Leaves seem smaller but being such a late spring they just leafed out not that long ago so they might not be full size yet.

    Craigslist laughs

Yep, a lot of people on this site are sitting on a gold mine. Just need a way to find the idiots that would actually buy this.

    STIHL at Northern Tool?

I've always heard this too but every Runnings (similar to Tractor Supply) I've ever been in is a Stihl dealer as well as quite a few hardware stores like you pointed out. I've never dealt with them so maybe they are very knowledgeable and can provide service but they feel similar to a big box...

    STIHL at Northern Tool?

Wow. Looks like only at certain stores. For MN - Blaine, Minnetonka, White Bear Lake, Woodbury and Duluth.

    Splitter pump size

Thanks for the replies everyone. Good call on double checking the control valve and the ports on the cylinder. The cylinder is a 5 x 2 x 24 not sure on the ports, I'll have to check sometime. I read a good thread on here about using larger than normal hoses and fittings as well as minimizing...

    Splitter pump size

Toying with building a new splitter. I might have access to a 18HP Briggs opposed twin. Wondering what size 2-stage pump would pair well with this. 22gpm says 12hp minimum so maybe a 18 is overkill? 28gpm says 15hp minimum but I also found one site saying 15 was the minimum but 20+ was...

    ash

My dad would always swear that the ash next to the creek dulled his chain faster than the ash in the groves and tree lines. He thought it had something to do with the tree sucking up some of the silt in the muddy water. Not sure if I agree but that's what he says.

    Split Hackberry

Our grove is about 65% Hackberry. We burn mostly Ash but have been mixing in some Hackberry, it's nice burning wood. I want to try to save it but it does seem like it might be a wasted effort. Like I said in my original post it might be better to take it down now while it is healthy and more...

    Split Hackberry

So the cable should be placed around here? Not sure if I can get that high.
