    Calcified wood ash?

Anyone experienced hard, calcified ash chunks when cleaning out their wood stove/furnace? I normally burn Ash, Hackberry and a little Burr Oak but I recently came into what I think is Red Elm that was dead and had just fallen over. It was dry (19%) so I’ve been burning it. I normally get the...

    Is this Siberian Elm

I’m pretty sure this is Siberian Elm but I’d like some other opinions to confirm. Smooth seeds, not hairy like American Elm. Fairly symmetrical leaves. Leaves seem smaller but being such a late spring they just leafed out not that long ago so they might not be full size yet.

    Splitter pump size

Toying with building a new splitter. I might have access to a 18HP Briggs opposed twin. Wondering what size 2-stage pump would pair well with this. 22gpm says 12hp minimum so maybe a 18 is overkill? 28gpm says 15hp minimum but I also found one site saying 15 was the minimum but 20+ was...

    Split Hackberry

I have a very tall Hackberry, it must be 90ft tall, 25-30" diameter. It is split at the first crotch and I'm wondering what to do. If the smaller branch does split and fall off it will land on for sure 1 if not 2 very young pear trees (2" DBH). If the main part falls it will likely not do any...

    "Horizontal" Leaner

I have a 20" diameter Oak that is leaning so much the top is nearly horizontal and it hangs right over a swing set. Barber chair is obviously a serious concern as well as crashing into the swing set. The swing set cannot be moved. Picture 4574 kind of shows that it has a slight lean to the...

    Amur Maple?

Any one have any experience burning Amur Maple? It's wood so I'll burn it but wondering if it's worth my time or not. My wife has some 10" diameter ones at her workplace and they are non-native invasive so she wants them gone. I tried searching some but can't find much info on it as far as...

    Portable Dual Fuel Generator

Anyone have any experience with portable dual fuel (gas/propane) generators? Looking at this Champion 7500watt model https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A0TLE5U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XtiZBbGG8N5TZ I’d like a generator to run a Vaporfire 100, fridge and 2 medium sized chest freezers in the event of a...

Advice needed on wood furnace chimney installation

I moved into an old farmhouse in June and I've been trying figure out how to add a wood furnace. Right now the house has electric forced air heat and my electric bill is $300+ and it has been that cold yet. FYI this is a two story house with the furnace in the basement. After a lot of...

    Firewood storage for newbie

I am new to firewood and have a few questions, I found some good information searching but would like a little more. I have around 15 trees, mostly Ash but some Hackberry that I had an excavator come in and remove in an effort to thin out my grove and yard. I have cut the majority of those...

    Water pump for cistern

I'm looking for a pump to pull water from my unused cistern. I'm planning on rerouting the gutters so that I can collect rainwater into the cistern and then use that for watering plants but I need a way to get it out of there. I know I could use an electric submersible sump pump but I like the...

    Echo PAS (tiller)

I've just recently moved from a somewhat large city to my grandparents old farm. With a bigger yard, garden and trees I've found the perfect excuse to upgrade some of my tools and equipment. One of the first things on my list was a string trimmer. After doing lots of research I decided on an...

    Burning painted wood

So the father-in-law bought the POS house next door to his and is in the process of tearing in down. He's been saving a lot of the wood to burn in his wood furnace in the basement. He's been saving some of the wood siding which is painted. I told him he was crazy to burn painted wood in his...

    1 or 2 saws??

I'm in the market for a chainsaw as I am sick of borrowing one or using a hand saw. Right now I live in town and wouldn't need a large or expensive saw. However, In the next 2-4 years I will be moving back to my family farm and will most likely be living in a house with a wood stove so I will...
