    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

When I was in my teens, we went up to my Uncle's farm every year to help with the bailing. His bailer did not have a kicker, so it was a lot of work. It was a 125 acre dairy farm in West Winfield NY (not too far from Utica). Winters were cold and windy, and I remember stories from my cousins...

Almost 24 years ago ... Matt Jr got his first deer with a 30-06 (a nice 7 point Buck) and I harvested both a Buck and Doe with my M77 in 300 Win Mag (downloaded a bit). We were still hunting out of the original cabin (12 X 20 with a 1/2 loft for sleeping), it was cramped! I pre-fabed it in my...

They cost more ... but I will stick with my Stihl chains! Luckily, I stocked up on them when they still had the NY GTGs and I could get them at a discount. Pretty sure I have enough of every size I use for the foreseeable future, all square file.

Nice, but are you going to glass bed the action?

Good neighbors are priceless ... and hard to find!

My big next door neighbor (Chris - 6'6" + 350 lbs) is moving soon ... a real shame, I will miss him. We have helped each other out on many occasions. So, he is getting rid of lots of stuff, and I helped him find a buyer for a 660 clone I built for him. The saw runs strong and has hardly been...

    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Broke out my CFB Hybrid to do a neighbor a favor ... cut down a decent size HVBW!!! Unfortunately, the HV part is only about 1/2 the diameter! It had to be roped and pulled, as it was leaning the wrong way, but the hinge worked just as it should. This saw is faster, but has less torque, than...

Not having shock towers in your way is a blessing!

I thought everyone already knew the clamshell saws were very anemic unless you put the largest top end on them, opened up the muffler and advanced the timeing. If you do that, they are "OK". (Yes, I did one, and the owner was very happy with it, you can ask Matt).

I remember (too well) installing Hooker Headers on FE Ford motors (big blocks, for those not familiar) in 67-70 Mustangs with shock towers. Had to disconnect one motor mount at a time and raise the engine up a pinch, there were 4 bolts / tube, and many needed an open-end wrench that had to be...

    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

As I've gotten older, I've made a few decisions: 1) I have enough guns, just play with the ones you have and get the most out of them. It may disappoint the purists, but my 348 has an optic front sight so I can still see it and use it. A few years ago, I updated almost all my scopes with...

    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Went to the range again today, and one of my friends was there with one of those new (slick) Garman Chronographs! So, he Chronographed both my Model 70 in 270 WSM, and my Ruger American Rifle in 223. I estimated the 270 WSM to shoot the 129 grain Barnes LRX bullet at 3,300 FPS, but it turns...

I knew from a mile away it was Black Locust. But what is the story on the dead deer???

You need to use a ported 660 to modify them.

Thanks for the response, you have more knowledge on this than I do, and I still remember the "old stuff" and the problems it created with bridges over watershed water. However, my purpose for gardening was to be healthy, so I would err on the side of caution and mill some White Oak for this...

One of the first things I got when I moved out of my parents' house was a vice! Currently have one inside, one outside (mounted on a bench under a grill cover), one up at the cabin, and one I plan to mount (I already have the vice) on the hitch on my truck. Don't know how anyone survives w/o...

I like bacon, but I limit my consumption of ANY processed meats, including bacon. Venison steaks, rare, for the win!!!
