Ah.. That makes more sense. I will try the new mix and see how the mixture acts then. Thanks for the help - I'll report back. Jim

    rattle at high rpm

I agree Getting acquainted sounds about right. That's why I want to know what the noise means. The video helped a lot - that's the condition I noticed. If that's four-stroking, or hitting the rev limiter, then I don't have a problem, looks like. And thanks to all for the mix advice - I will...

    rattle at high rpm

lean? You're right, I haven't messed with saws much, though I did work on XL12s for BLM in Fairbanks one summer. In 1968. I think I'll try a lower-oil mix and a little richer turn. The local dealer is really a lawnmower guy so I'll have to find someone else who knows what he's hearing. Thanks...

    rattle at high rpm

I have a Dolmar 5100s about 3 yrs old only about three dozen tanks through it. Runs great. Lately has started making a light rattling sound at high speed just as you speed up to start into the cut. As soon as it's cutting much at all the rattle stops and the saw pulls just fine in the cut...

    Jonsered 80

did good I have an 80 I bought new in 1974, kept up, and used quite a bit. I think mine is doing great, but yours looks in much better shape (finger guard, paint). I've never been into the points or had the flywheel off. Three plugs in 36 years. Don't use it so much lately but save for backup...

    Black Walnut trees...how much

move the garden? There's a problem with the garden there that taking the trees out won't solve for a long while: http://gardening-articles.com/Black%20Walnut%20Tree%20Toxicity.htm Some plants can live with walnuts, many can't. Does he have another place he can put his garden? I agree the wood...

Safety was not a factor in the good ol' days

glad True. I AM glad I don't have to run one of them anyway, looks like it'd wear you out quick. And I need my torso, too. Jim

Safety was not a factor in the good ol' days

whacker That's not SO different from a sawblade on a weedwhacker, and plenty of people use them (me included). The saw blades are no doubt better now than when those were built (30's, 40's?) and less likely to shatter. Still, you're farther away and at least have some steel between you and the...

    Moving Firewood

far woodlot, lots of tools November, cut in the woodlot, 1/2 mile uphill from house. Limb and pile brush, then winch trees to woods road, then buck. Haul big trailer homemade splitter up there with Ford 2120 (great rig). Split and stack until next fall. Back up with homemade trailer, fill and...

PS-5100 is it as good as an 361?

3 different saws I'm a homeowner cutter/small time logger. My requirements are reliability, good handling and vb damping, easy to clean filters and chain covers, solid feel. I like it if the tanks are easy to fill and run out at the same time, and hold enough so I'm ready for a short break when...

    Most Dangerous Log Splitter EVER

worth the time! Worth the wait! Looks like it runs on a friction drive, a SLIGHT safety feature. The old boy's run it some, by the looks of it and him. Thanks!

    Most Dangerous Log Splitter EVER

not as bad as it looks I own one of these, haven't used it in years. Mainly it's hard on your back, because you're bent over most of the time or kneeling. It doesn't seem that dangerous when you're using it. Knots or elm or locust doesn't slow it down. Problems come when a real stringy piece...

    Premium sparkplugs

same plug I think I've had the same plug in my Jonsy 80 for 15 years. Starts fine and runs same as always. Maybe time to upgrade? Nah......

Bone dry chain on a Jonsereds 80

adjuster I have an 80, and it has an oiler adjuster in the center of the plug below the muffler. My old owners manual says start with 1½ turns anti-clockwise from full snug closed. The hex fitting in the plug removes the pump parts - looks like about two dozen o-rings, balls, springs, etc...

My first run with my new PS-5100

Another 3/8" I caught the 5100 virus here on AS. I asked my dealer to sell me the saw with 3/8 - 18". As delivered, it had that odd rounded-raker chain -is that safety chain? The dealer traded me even for Oregon 72 chain. I hand-file and avoid dirt any way I can. The saw cuts great even though...

    This Taint' You Fadda's Chainsaw!

How does it work, though? The only one of these I've seen work was a guy who clears lots for us, and his rig has a chain saw that swings into the tree as he lifts. The pix you show has a circular saw but I can't see how it retracts or advances into the stem. Does it pivot? Does the operator...

Broke a raker off my chain, is it cashed out?

agree with sling'r I've had years of use from an Oregon semi-chisel with two busted rakers on my Jonsereds 80, didn't even notice then or now, only when filing. Jim

    Chainsaw Terminology

different dutchman In carpentry, a dutchman is a piece of wood fitted into a divot or somewhere there's damage to surrounding wood. Kind of like the storied Dutch kid's finger in the dike, fits tight. Wonder where dutchman in felling comes from. Jim

    My new Dolmar

actually neither I found a closer dealer on the Dolmar site, Green Mountain Power Equip. in Northampton. Very small place, carries lots of equipment, not sure how much they know about saws, but 10 min from me not 1 hour. Haven't decided yet where to buy, but I've never had a warranty problem...
