Size of file for Oregon 7272

7/32" is correct for the chain stamped 72 on the driver on the first chain. The 25 stamped into the raker on the second chain is actually the suggested guideline of .025" lower height of the raker in relation to the tooth. I would assume that the second chain is a standard oregon 3/8" chain...

Usefulness of bench chain grinder for serious stock removal?

There is a trick to it, especially if you have very much material to remove like on a rocked chain. Make quick "ticks" to the tooth with the wheel, what I mean by that is don't just shove the wheel to the tooth till it starts to turn color, touch, lift, touch, lift, touch, lift etc. It's not...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

It's really looking like the Carb or the Coil could be the culprit, it comes down to a coin toss on which one to try first. Probably try the carb just for the sheer fact the the saw sat around unused and thus probably gummed up. That and the fact that the saw has extremely low hours so I would...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

That's good info, I can rule that out though I think. When I pull the carb, the pressure in the tank pushes fuel out at me through the new filter and fuel line. have blown through it with the cap off and it has plenty of flow.

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

Your problem sounds all to similar to mine. Being that it is obvious that my saw spent a lot of it's early life sitting around in the garage...probably with fuel in it, I can see how something could be gummed up and causing a problem even though I rebuilt the carb with a oem stihl kit.

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

It's got the big hole, and dual port muffler cover. Checked the screens inside and they are clean and clear of soot/buildup. Thanks

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

I blocked it off behind the carb, thus including the intake boot. I pulled vacuum and pushed pressure through the impulse hose with the mity vac, thus including it also. Flexed the saw around while under vacuum and it held unfortunately. I actually went as far as taking the clutch off and...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

That's the gremlin...I have it tuned to where it idles and revs out per spec, might run absolutely flawless for 20 minutes, then starts acting up for no reason what so ever. Driving me nuts. Might just start throwing parts at it like a madman, then I'll have some spares for next time eh?

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

I feel like I can rule out vapor lock, tank vent works properly and is clean. I can crack the cap when it acts up, it sucks no air, then restart and problem will still be present. I tried to rule the coil out by placing a light up spark tester inline with the plug, seemed to still have spark...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

I did actually apply pressure also while testing, the mity vac lets me do both. I tested it both vac and pressure, it passed, I put it back together and ran it, problem still present, took it back apart and retested. Still passed, that was a frustrating day. I know of a saw a friend has...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

I actually tried that once, kind of masked the problem so to speak. But still noticibly not running correct in the long run. Metering level is set to spec. Thanks

Stihl 046 Magnum runs perfect then randomly dies

I've been fighting this gremlin for a while, figured I would go fishing for some help again. I bought this saw from a guy who bought it new then hardly ever used it. It's safe to say the saw sat for a long time without being ran. It's a 046 magnum in pristine condition...all original...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

Yes, your definitely helping. The cylinder/piston look awesome, no scuffing or wear of any kind in the chrome plating or piston skirts. I can see how maybe that clutch side bearing could be the problem. The saw sat around alot obviously before I got it, maybe it got left sitting with a chain...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

I took the engine shroud off and and sprayed starting fluid (i had no carb cleaner) all around the intake boot and impulse line, flexed the saw in the mounts and even put my finger on the impulse and intake and flexed them around and it never grabbed/dropped RPM. They both look like new, no...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

It was actually happening last weekend even after I filled it up. Seems more related to getting it fully warmed up than down to half a tank.

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

With a straight edge acrossed it, it's maybe 1/64" under flush, can just barely see daylight between the end of the lever and the straight edge. Is this in spec?

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

I have the carb apart now, everything is clean/new looking. The pump and metering diaphrams both look great, not that that means they are working properly, but clean and free of any defects. Jet is clean as I expected. Can a guy put compressed air to the little passage ways under the metering...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

Well I dove in and took the carb off. Does the fuel line usually have pressure when you remove the carb? I cracked the fuel cap and it blew a little pressure off, then the fuel line continued to spit fuel for a second. Should that tank have pressure like that? Possible the vent isn't working...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

Well I took the saw fire wood cutting Saturday. Fired it up and started cutting the first tree, ran great for the first 10 minutes or so, then it tried to die on me so I went and grabbed my tachometer and gave it a full tune, after adjusting the Low speed screw ended up back where it was...

Stihl 046 Magnum runs out of fuel once warmed up

Well that didn't fix it. The saw ran perfect till half a tank, then I let off the throttle after a cut and it died. Filled the tank back up to deny/confirm if it was a hole in the fuel line problem and the issue was still present. Runs great till you let off the throttle then tries to die. I...
