Dolmar PS-421 hard to pull start

My Dolmar is really hard to start. I mean it starts fine if you can hang on to the pull rope handle. I took the pull start off a while back to check if the easy pull spring wasn't broken but it looked fine. Once it's warmed up it's not an issue. It's not hydro locked. Is this common? I mean it's...

After 36 years my old splitter finally needed a make over....

You went all out on the old girl. Mine was built in 1982 by my father and I. He has passed now but the old splitter lives on.I still use it and as yours has split many cords or wood.

    New saw smile!

I've got one of them. They're great saws for the money. :)

    Splitter motor?

Take care of either one and it will last a long time. I'm not of a fan of the newer Kohler stuff either.

    Anybody miss winter yet...?

I miss winter. Last winter wasn't what I call a winter, no snow or cold temps. I hate bugs and especially ticks and flies.

    Englander NC 30

I've had one for a couple of years and am very pleased with it. Make sure the wood is dry and it won't disappoint.

I really like hackberry for firewood. Good stuff when it's dry.

    Running engines at half throttle??

The throttle plate is directly related to engine RPM. The purpose of the governor is to keep a constant RPM under a said load.

    Running engines at half throttle??

Exactly my point. Less RPM=Less wear.

    Running engines at half throttle??

A piston is only going to go up and down so many times.

    Running engines at half throttle??

Exactly. I've been around small engines for a long and even had my own repair service. Small engines will run a long time if taken care of. I do agree that 2 strokes need to be run wide open under any type of load.

    Running engines at half throttle??

You don't do bad for old feller. :envy:

    Running engines at half throttle??

Agreed. Neglect comes to mind when a motor fails. Usually not always.

    Running engines at half throttle??

If the engine is not under a constant heavy load it's ok to throttle them back. Less fuel and less noise.

    Log Splitter Engine Problem

Those old Wisconsin motors are tough as nails. We had one on an old grain elevator and it got nothing but abuse. The elevator rusted out before the motor quit. It had a pull rope and always started on the second pull cold or hot, didn't matter. When we were done it just got a tarp put over it. I...

    Log Splitter Engine Problem

Float stuck and/or bad needle and seat is my bet. Don't run it until you change the oil and repair the carb.

    Looking at a Dolmar PS421

I bout one a few years ago. I put an 18" bar on it just for reach purposes and it pulls it with ease. Only thing that is kind of weird on it is the kill/choke switch. I've run Stihls for many years and it backward for for me. It's my favorite saw by far.
