    standing dead considered seasoned?

If the bark is loose or off, the upper 3/4 of the tree will usually be dry but the 1st 6 feet of trunk usually still has too much moisture to burn. If you split those, they dry fast however. If you wait too long with standing dead trees, the stem gets punky or wood ants get into it. Some...

    hackberry for firewood

I thin a fair amount of hackberry out of my woods. IMO it is good firewood, splits easily, not as good a firewood as oak, hickory, red elm but better than white elm.

    Rayco vs TW-5 splitter

Does anyone have any experience or ideas about the Rayco LS2526 splitter vs the Timberwolf TW-5 splitter. I am looking at both and the Rayco so far looks like more splitter for less $. Thanks HV

    Best firewood saw for scrounger

Hi Windthrown - Not being negative at all about MS361. I cut 100 cords a year and most of it is with a 361/20 bar. It's a great saw IMO. But I don't use it for tsi because I get too tired lugging it around. Firebuckeye has a Husky 141 and he only wants 4 cords. I got no idea what kind of...

    026 pro chain

026/260 Pro with 16" bar is a beautiful, smooth-as-silk little saw for smaller firewood and light enough to hike around doing tsi. The factory setup is .325 and attempting to convert over to 3/8 seems like a bad idea to me. RS chain = full chisel is a terrific fit for this saw, cuts very fast...

    ash and red elm dying

Dutch elm disease flared up again in MN in 2005 and 2006, killing many white (American) elm and red elm. There is no emerald ash borer in MN at this time. A few ash die from what the foresters call ash decline but it is not a very common phenomenon. Local environmental conditions can...

looking for advice on a log splitter...

I split about 100 cords with a Troy-Bilt 33 ton splitter. The Honda 8hp motor was excellent. The hydraulics and beam were good although the directional switch failed at about 100c, a $230 part. The rest of it - the little cheesy tail lights, the wheels, the fenders etc - are suitable for...

    Best firewood saw for scrounger

If you are only cutting 4 cords, do NOT get anything as large as a Stihl MS361. It is a terrific firewood saw but not for what you are doing. Use a smaller, lighter, homeowner type of saw with a 14 inch bar. Less fatigue, handier in the tangle of branches you will be working in, easier to...
