    Totem Pole-a Christmas project

Great project and yes those little saws suck those little tanks dry pretty quick . If you want to simplify painting those grooves, use spraypaint, let it dry, then zip over it with the angle grinder or belt sander. Make sure its really dry though or the sawdust will stick to the paint.Mount that...

    chainsaw carving

More imprtant than drawing is the ability to visualise in 3 dimensions. My drawing has improved with consistent practice and so# has my carving. Are you competent enough with the saw to make accurate falling cuts, clean wedges? If so, then you could probably figure it out. Try making a mushroom...

    ripping question

I need to slab an 8 ft. long, 30 inch diameter red cedar, I have access to an 066 with 36 inch bar and .404 full skip chain(not a milling chain). I just want to slab off a third of the log at @20 inch diameter for a project and I can't afford to screw up.Not sure about the chain,Anyone see a...

    Compost tea

feed the microbes I attended an organic turfgrass seminar last week and the idea was that chemical fertilizers feed the plants but sterilize the soil, creating a vicious cycle whereby the plants must be fertilized, she compared it to hydroponics.Compost tea is meant to put beneficial microbes...

    New to carving

sounds a bit big for a detail saw, which is what a 12 inch dime tip is for, detailing. I use an ms 180 12 inch dime tip for small carvings and for detailing large ones.I'm not a burly dude so light is better. I use a 250 for blocking out bigger carvings, nothing over 2 feet diameter. Oh ya, I can't...

What is the best wood for carving?

The best carving wood is FREE wood! Cracking is a part of the deal when using whole logs. Put a kerf down the back to relieve some of the stress of drying. Also keep your carving away from heat sources, put a plastic garbage bag over it and turn it inside out every day so it won't get moldy. You...

    Seeking advice from saw carvers??

Hmmm, after reading my own post I realized it sounds discouraging, not my intention at all. You'll probably do fine with a 026 and a carving bar. Personally,I just loved my 180 carving set up as soon as I got it, what a treat, amazing what you can do with it.I had used a saw 3 times before I...

    Seeking advice from saw carvers??

Keep your 260 stock for blocking out and get a smaller saw with a 1/4 pitch setup for details. you dont need that much power in a saw that will be used for light detailing and refinement of a rough carving. I use a Stihl 180, lots of guys use 170s because they're inexpensive, the echo package...
