Question about hydraulic oil for splitter

Last year I bought an Iron and Oak Log Splitter. The dealer filled it with hydraulic fluid from Napa Auto, using the 5-gallon cans. Iron and Oak recommends changing the fluid in their splitters every 100 hours.

I'm No Longer a Piker: I Broke Down and Bought Firewood

The trees are 22-footers. I already bucked some of the logs and moved them to where I'll be splitting.

I'm No Longer a Piker: I Broke Down and Bought Firewood

With the unrest in the mid-east, I decided that I could no longer depend on free trees. So I broke down and bought 7 cords of tree-length firewood. Needless to say, I have been very busy bucking the stuff. Then comes the splitting.

    Iron and Oak Log Stripper

Nipple for the control handle. If you not quick enough to stop the wedge coming back, a lodged log will bust the nipple.

Needed New Tractor for New Splitter

Had to get a new tractor for the new splitter. Figured, better spend the money while it is still worth something. Besides, no more freezing my butt while pushin snow in our Yankee winters.

    Bagsters Make Great Splitter Covers

Those throw-away dumpsters called Bagsters, make good covers for splitters. You don't have to bungie any corners or ends. Mine was in some high winds and stayed put.

    Iron and Oak Log Stripper

Finally installed the log stripper on my new Iron & Oak splitter. I wish they came this way from the factory. Local rental store rents without the stripper and makes people pay for the busted nipple if they retract with a log on the wedge.

What size logs to put in wood stove

Stev, Good rule of thumb for log size: if you can pick the log up with just your trigger finger and thumb on the same hand, it's the right size.

    Northern or Iron Oak splitters

I was just stating CT law. Anything towed on the road with a rubber tire is considered a motor vehicle. Mopeds are a similar issue. I see a lot of kids driving them and those scooters around here. By CT law you need a motorcycle or car driver license to operate one legally. I was talking...

    Northern or Iron Oak splitters

Iron and Oak recommends that you not tow faster than 35 mph. I would look at renting a trailer. Most trailers around here rent for about $50 for 4 hours. And if you really want to split hairs, towing this splitter is illegal. It's considered a motor vehicle and requires a reg. and dot lights.

    Northern or Iron Oak splitters

Notime, Check out ebay, an outfit out of n.y., usedequipmentexpert, is selling a fast cycle Iron and Oak splitter with 9hp Honda motor and log stripper for $2,200 or best offer, plus $300 shipping. Tell him $2,100 with shipping and you got a deal. This is the same model as mine.

    Northern or Iron Oak splitters

With 33flame's table, you work next to the rail on the side of the controls. You don't need the cradle on that side with his table on the opposiite side. When splitter in vertical, you have to remove table. You don't need the table anyway, the ground and toe of your splitter is the table...

    Northern or Iron Oak splitters

John, I've run about a half dozen different log splitters in my day. I can't sing enough praises about my current log splitter: Iron and Oak Fast Cycle: 9 hp Honda motor, 3 and one half" piston, 16 gpm pump, and 8 second cycle time. I would tell you to buy this model and forget the rest. I...
