Did I Invent This Or Has It Been Done Before?

Pushing over back leaners with a branch/ladder/etc, it occurred to me I could get leverage by triangulating the push pole to the stem with a ratchet strap. It worked, anyway. Longer pole+strap = more leverage. The beauty of the system is you can change the placement of the pole at will, and...

    MS461 failure analysis help

My 461 died the same way, main bearing failure. I ran it at half throttle too much (bad habit, user error, mia culpa) and slipped the clutch, causing the clutch and crankshaft to heat up. The PTO side bearing has a nylon cage, and this melted or at least deformed enough to cause the bearing to fail.

    Side and back lean

If you know the tricks, you can make a tree do gravity - defying moves with a hand winch. But... You gotta know the tricks, and the "feel" of what you can get away with only comes through experience. The actual physics and geometry are straightforward enough. There is a guy on YouTube, who ran a...

Does anyone else "Long Hinge" difficult trees ?

Yeah I do this sometimes, regular face cut, but with a "wall" for want of a better word. Like, standard diagonal cut into the stem, then vertical down, a few inches depends on the tree, then horizontal back out to complete the face cut. Generally I'll cut the diagonal, then the horizontal, so...

    M-Tronic/Autotune & Oil Ratio Change?

It has oft been stated that changing the oil mix ratio requires re-tuning the saw, as the increase in oil will displace a bit of gasoline and therefore technically lean the air-fule mixture. This I understand. My question is twofold, really: 1. In a manual carb saw, will going from 50:1 to...

How did you get into Tree Surgery? (Employment question)

The "surgery" part is somewhat overrated as a requirement, most of the time. 99% difficult removals, pruning back overhanging branches, topping (!) for light. Learn how to do a proper branch removal so it doesn't skin the tree, proper collar pruning cut and how different species respond to...

What You Should Do If You Get Hurt in the Woods When Alone

Buckin' Billy-Rae told the story of his accident on one of his videos. It's quite a story.

    MS 250 won’t start

The 250 is notorious for finicky starting, and easy to flood. It's choke on, pull until fire, then choke off and start. The problem is it's hard to hear or feel the first fire, and even one more pull with choke will flood. It's a feel thing, once you learn to identify the first fire, you're good.

    Thinking hard now....

Right, wasn't there a fellow on here, or maybe it was another forum, who bought a 4 inch ash slab for $600 or something? But most of the cost was the space it took up in a barn for the last twenty years. I suppose there are guys who use green lumber though. Don't the Amish build in green?

    Thinking hard now....

Problem I foresee is people going to want cured lumber. That requires a massive shed or maybe open air yard for covered stacks, and machinery to move the board stacks, and a time lag of a year or two before sale. I know a few guys with woodmizers. One has a well payed job and Mills as a hobby...

Boss working on spider lift during lightning storm

Possibly safer in the spiderlift. Possibly. Lightning will take the most direct route to ground, witch is the metal machine. If he's lucky, it might bypass him altogether.

    Safety gone mad

If I may butt in...there's a time and place for passive safety features and a time and place to modify or remove them. Wisdom is knowing when to ditch the trimmer guard, angle grinder guard, tape down the deadman switch on whatever, etc. In order to safely dispense with the safety "feature" we...

    Hand filing is for beginners?

Grinder is cheaper. With the grinder dialled in you can remove microns of material. Arguably you get a more refined cutting edge with a file.

    Torque Vs RPM

No engineer, me, but I would think the V8 saws are not even scratching the surface of their potential power. The cutting performance is limited by 2 things, chain speed and cutter performance. Chain speed is a function of horsepower in a direct drive transmission, but with gearing torque would...

Just Starting Out - How am I most likely to hurt myself?

Taking chainsaws out of the equation obviously reduces your chances of getting hurt a lot. Your main risk of catastrophic failure is unclipping yourself by accident. I did a training course a few years ago, and one of the guys on the course did thus - he was advancing his main line and forgot to...
