020av full rebuild - pic heavy

Somehow last year I wound up with four 020av's in various levels of disassembly. One box even had lots of NOS parts that the previous owner purchased for rebuild in 2004 or something and never got around to it. I think I'm $50 into all 4 saws (one of which is a super that I restored and...

    020av carb options

Piecing together another 020av from multiple parts saws. I remember reading that carbs on these are touchy. which one do I want to go with? I have a made in USA Tillotson HU7 512 (I think?) or a Walbro WA 1A. Thoughts/experiences/opinions? [edit: HU7; not H117]

Want to Buy 044/440 Part saw

Looking for 044/440 parts saw. I have cases, crank, flywheel, cylinder, & piston. Need dang near everything else. If you have a parts saw with cracked cases/roasted p&c, etc., I’m interested. Thank you!

Want to Buy MS270 Recoil/brake screw sleeve

Hard to source part, apparently. Anyone have for sale?

    MS 270 trashed bearing... options?

Saw a 270 on CL and went to look at it thinking I’d quick flip it. Turns out it was locked up, so I talked him down to $10. Finally got to mess with it today, and the clutch side bearing appears to be toast. Surprisingly, piston looks fine through the exhaust port. I have zero interest in...

Want to Buy 361/362 Top Cover

Looking for a used top cover for a 361xp. As I understand it, 362 is the same (but correct me if there are subtle differences). Need the whole thing—the cylinder cover, screws, and the air filter cover & clips. If you have a half-decent air filter, that’ll be nice, too. ;-) Thanks in advance! —JC

Want to Buy 288xp Lite top cover & muffler

Need the top cover & muffler for a 288xp lite. Saw I bought had no screws, so would need those, too. (4, I think? Two through the muffler into jug and two(?) that screw into oil tank) Thank you! —JC

    028 clutch/drum interference

Bought an 028Super parts saw & pieced together what it was missing. New bearings, seals, clutch drum, oil pump gears. Clutch was on saw. I put it all together painlessly. Trying to tune it, I can’t get idle low enough to keep chain from spinning. Not my first rodeo. I’m no expert, but I’m very...

    028 clutch cover/tensioner interference

Basket case 028Super. Bought a clutch cover & it looks like it interferes with the chain tensioner. Looks to me like there should be a cutout in the clutch cover for the tensioner. Am I correct in this? Another hint... clutch cover says made in West Germany, but saw serial number shows it was...

    Will this leak? 028Super

So I noticed this on an 028Super I bought. The missing piece was definitely missing before I bought it (as a basket case). I thought it was a retaining ring—like a snap ring kind of thing. I removed what I believe were factory bearings (FAG brand... can anyone confirm those are OEM?), and found...

    Stihl 038 ID from serial?

Craigslist. Guy thinks it’s an 038. Carb setup (location of LA screw) looks like an 028 to me. Clutch cover says 1119, brake flag says 1118. Can anyone tell by serial number 217301006 If it is an 038, can the serial tell if it’s a regular, super, or mag2? Thank you!

Measuring squish on an (OEM) popup?

Probably dumb questions. Working on an 028Super, which of course has popup piston OEM. Do normal squish measurement methods apply? I typically do the “put four little pieces held on with grease” method. Am I still shooting for .020-ish? Does the fact that it’s a popup change my approach in...

Want to Buy .325 18” Stihl mount B&C

Fixing up an 028S, and want to run 18” .325. Don’t care about brand & just needs to be “good enough” condition. Not “jacked up”, but doesn’t have to be pretty. Hoping someone has an 18” that they’ll never use laying around, lol.

    Stihl ID?

Craigslist seller doesn’t know what he has. Looks rough, but price is right. Is this a MS210/290?

    046 Rebuild Complete (Pic Heavy)

Well, I'd like to start by thanking you all for putting up with a dozen different threads about different challenges I've had with this saw. This is the most in-depth rebuild I've ever done, and I'd still be scratching my head if it weren't for everyone on AS. Especially willing to put up with...

    Quick bearing questions

replacing bearings on my 046 rebuild today. I didn't take detailed enough pictures on tear down, so 2 newbie questions: The one with this notch... that's the clutch side, right? And the "exposed ball" side faces towards the rod, right? So oil gets to the balls? Stated differently, the...

    046 Chain brake pin

Rebuilding an 046. Just discovered this pin on which the brake handle/flag pivots. Can anyone tell which pin it is from the IPL below? How much of a pain is it to get this broken pin out? Any advice? Thanks! --JC

    046 "good coil" timing advance?

I'm (slowly) restoring an early 046 with the D-chamber jug. I was reading last night about the "better" ignition module: 3-leg 1309 coil that allegedly has more aggressive timing curves. (Thanks to @Jacob J. for the info there!) I was planning on doing a third to half keyway's worth of advance...

    Solder thickness for squish?

I'm building an 046 w/ the "good port timing" D-jug. Measuring squish tonight with the "4 pieces of solder and grease taking the jug off" method. I got .039 with old gasket, .021 with no gasket. Gasket itself measures .02. Error is probably in my crappy calipers or the operator. Then I'm...
