    Who is legally responsible?

You could go down to the local court house and get a copy of the deed/legal description for that land and surrounding lands. Then from these you can measure out to find the property lines and corners, and ribbon them in. Once you have that done contact all of the adjoining neighbors and get...

Its Heeeere. A Game Of Logging Class

I've taken the class and look at it this way... Its another tool to put in the toolbox. Not for every tree or every situation. But the techniques they teach have their time and their place.

    Carrying saw on your shoulder?

For the long packs I have a true north bar cover that I use to keep the dogs from tearing my back up, it was like 50 bucks but well worth the investment.

the 5 day work week, what a concept...

Must be an east coast thing. UP here we work in any weather (rain/snow/hot/humid/cold) except lightning for the most part. Sometimes we do take time off when there is 50-60mph winds though.

    Is this worth considering?

Weather and daylight permitting many (including myself) often try to swing 10 hour days, but I never work anything less than 8.

    Humboldt vs. Conventional

Our mills don't require square butts as most of the notch will come off in the slabs when sawing at the mill. So a conventional notch gets you a couple more inches of butt log off the stump.

    VW engines

That second video is funny. I think that "processor" is about 3x as slow as making wood the ole fashion way.

    this weather sucks

Using a bear paw type chain right now. Will try to grab some pictures one of these days. Next year going to probably try studded ring chains and see if they make any difference.

    this weather sucks

I know many places it won't go. But those same places it won't go with snow it also won't go in the summer time. Some ground is too steep for a skidder be it dry or snow covered. Properly freezing in a road/trail can make it firm like a dirt road IME. Your right we don't have large changes in...

    this weather sucks

20+ feet is seasonal. If you think its far fetched look it up. But to get through the 3-5 feet of ground snow you take your snowshoe and dig at the base until you hit the root flare. Cut/limb/top then drive the skidder on the roads that you previously froze in, and haul them out. Anywho I'm...

    this weather sucks

Yarder...... Like i said our skidder climbs the same slopes dry or snow covered. So I can't see the issues with skidder logging in the snow. Edit: your right I am pretty green, I've only been logging in 18-20 feet of snow for ~13 years with a skidder.

    this weather sucks

If your truly logging mountains when why are you using a skidder at all? Our JD 548 at work will climb the same hills in a few feet of snow as it will in the summer.

    There's no crying in logging....

Contract with a mill means your balls are tied up when it comes to prices. A quota at a mill is a much better thing IMO. Means you have choices where to haul and can decide based on prices/distance/mill specs/etc.

    this weather sucks

Never heard of too much snow to skid logs. We chain em up and skid on through the snow. Winter is great logging season, get as much wood out before spring comes and load restrictions get put on for the highways.

    Swamp Logger Bobby Goodson

UP here the crew I work for its rare to hear cussing and profanity. When something goes wrong we fix the problem and get on with life. I don't remember and cussing or profanity at all this last week. Must be a regional thing.

    Mn/Wi/Ia/Up GTG

Nov. 15th is opening day of Michigan rifle deer season, so a GTG on the 14th isn't feasible:cry:. Maybe someday .

    Skidder problems in cold weather

I would guess water someplace in the system. When it stays cold it turns to ice crystals and restricts fluid flow.
