Dangerous barber chair felling ash infected with emerald ash borer

The GOL teaches 80% of the width of the tree if you are looking at it from the notch side. Others say 30% deep notch if you are looking at it from either side of the notch. Normal depends on who you learned from and where you are from.

Anybody use a reduced weight bar?

I use a 32 stihl light bar and love it. I'd recommend stihl or cannon for your application. The tips don't hold up well to bore cutting on some of the other popular brands.

Looking for a new set of chaps?

Big fan of the clogger products myself. Have the zeros and they are about as comfortable as it gets with saw protection. Also have some labonville full wraps I'll through on for quick cuts which don't warrant changing pants, in the winter for extra warmth, or as a second pair for the person...

    Going semi-pro+ chainsawmilling

The 40% was from timed cuts from another trusted member who knows his stuff, from race chains to work chains to milling. I am more than willing to take his word for it. I'd time some cuts myself, but don't have anything but square for my milling bar. Never had a carbide chain and don't see...

    Going semi-pro+ chainsawmilling

Square is harder freehand. Could if I had to, but I prefer to carry spare chains and swap them out. Even with round it is quicker than touching up in the field and touching up on the grinder is quicker and more consistent in the end.

    Going semi-pro+ chainsawmilling

The best upgrade in any chainsaw scenario is sharpness of chain. Nothing can beat proper square ground. People who have tested side by side had 40% better cut times milling with square vs round. I haven't tested myself as I had my square grinder from the get go. It is a big investment, but...

    Dolmar Parts

Allegedly the parts production won't cease till 7 years after the ope units themselves. I'm guessing this won't be entirely true and certain parts will phase out sooner.

    Makita 7900 or 6400

mm should cause a need for a change in tune, but hard to imagine it'd change it that much. I'll have to run to the shop and see if Nate sent me a third stiffer metering spring and carb kit as a spare and see if I can wrangle up a part number. He hasn't been around much since his shop burned down.

    Makita 7900 or 6400

Curious if you put a new plug in it. One of mine was giving me fits. Bought it as a runner that needed some love. Ran when I got it. Took it apart, gave it a good cleaning. Put carb kit and new NGK plug in it. All back together and it wouldn't do anything but flood. After a few days and a...

    Makita 7900 or 6400

My older 6401/7910 always popped. Got two newer 6421s and they liked to flood till I replaced the metering spring at the advice of @fordf150 . I unfortunately don't remember the specifics, but perhaps he will stop in and enlighten us.

    Makita 7900 or 6400

The carb is perfectly sufficient for all three models in stock form, Ported may be a different story depending on who ports it. There are mods to be done to the carb that can fix that though. Tuning with a limited carb does suck. If it sucks that bad you can always fit a 272xp(I think that's...

    Makita 7900 or 6400

Carb is same for all three in current lineup. Only thing that has changed through the years to my knowledge is the tamper resistence. Same part number, as seen in the Makita manual....

    Makita 7900 or 6400

But there is a point in using a 79 CC saw with a shorter bar if you swap in a larger sprocket. My 6401/7910 is pure joy to run with a 24 inch bar, 8 pin sprocket, and square ground chain.

Need help on which Power head decision, 395XP, 661, or save some $$ on a CS-800P

It would be impressive if it had two 395s or 3120s. Gets the job done as it is and the price was right!

Need help on which Power head decision, 395XP, 661, or save some $$ on a CS-800P

I know someone who milled some with a dolmar 7900. Said it was a great mill saw up to a 28 inch bar, but beyond that was 395 territory. He has also milled with 660s and 661s. My current setup is a 50 inch double ended bar with a dolmar/makita 6421 on each end pulling square ground chain. I...

Need help on which Power head decision, 395XP, 661, or save some $$ on a CS-800P

Aside from the front chain adjuster, the 395xp is a far superior milling saw. Oils way better. Outboard clutch keeps a lot of heat away from the cylinder.

    After the storm cleanup.

I personally have my doubts on that ebay rope. Says nothing about manufacturer on there. Says it is made in the US, but if they won't post the manufacturer's name I don't believe them. There's plenty of great, trusted rope manufacturers in the world. New England Rope/Teufelberger, Sterling...

Advice for finding low volume log buyers

Yep, they are some good 'ol folk, that's for sure. That's where I get all my rough sawn lumber for my projects as well. Owner is a good guy and have a few friends that do/have worked in the mill over the years.

Advice for finding low volume log buyers

We take our good logs to Price Lumber Northeast of Cinci. They are one of the top exporters of walnut in the country. Good chance it where the other guy is taking his logs. Although I've heard of another place or two. Price is just a big outfit with a mountain of logs and will always buy...
