    Dont be this guy

The thought of notifying a whole neighborhood in order to give out a free estimate is idiotic. Drive house to house telling them you’ll be over at the Johnson’s measuring gutters. Gtfoh

    Dont be this guy

If you say so. We had a family business for 20 years. I did many of the night time and weekend free quotes. I never felt the need to notify neighbors why I was there measuring something. Have you ever owned a business? Done free quotes?

I also think you overestimate how "professional" many tree companies are. Many don't spend thousands on advertising with fancy lettered shirts and lettered trucks. Probably a young kid starting out that wanted to get back home to see his kids.

    Dont be this guy

I re-read the original post. It isn't clear whether he was asked to give an estimate or not. It's possible he had nothing better to do than ride around a random residential neighborhood guessing what trees they may want cut, and giving out a random quote for a tree the owner may or may not want...

    Dont be this guy

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to disagree. If your neighbor asks someone to give them an estimate, you feel it is that companies duty to inform you of why they are there? You didn't call them, and its not your property. I could see him letting the property owner know who he is, but him being...

Thinking of a taller wedge for a Super Splitter

The beams are all the same. The rack for the SE is wider, but they stopped the re-enforced wedge on the SE and went to using the same wedge on all the models.

Thinking of a taller wedge for a Super Splitter

If one were to do it, that is the best way. Set it back so that the main wedge takes most of the initial resistance/hit. The setback higher wedge would come in as a secondary to cut strings and such.

Thinking of a taller wedge for a Super Splitter

I talked to Paul about this very issue. His stance was that adding a taller wedge was a bad idea as it would add more resistance and could wear out the cam gear and rack pre maturely, even with the HD and SE.

I can't believe I'm about to type this, but I agree with Del. Having given free estimates for many years, you just want to get in and out some times. If the guy wasn't causing any trouble and was just writing on a paper, it seems overly dramatic calling the police. He probably didn't tell them...

    Training new Operators

I agree with the others. You get what you pay for. We had a family construction business for 20 years and good employees were very few and far between. Most that are good enough/competent enough to be trusted and left alone on a job end up leaving for more money or starting their own business...

    Where are the employees?

They always mention how it "only took x amount of hours" Never do they consider factoring in that it could only be done that quickly with decades of experience and hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment.

    Just ordered mine last week.

    Where are the employees?

The tree companies aren't going to work cheaper because a given homeowner cant afford it. Equipment costs, fuel costs, insurance, etc. are outrageous for tree work.

    What’s your handiest tool?

Handiest tool would depend on what I'm doing. Carpentry, metal working, firewood, etc. In general some top choices for me would be: *Tractor and a welder

    Whats everyones favorite splitting device?

I have an original Sotz monster maul. They had 4 models. The "lady's maul" weighed 11.5 lbs and had a 8lb head. They also had a 16 lb maul with a 12 lb head, a 24 lb maul with a 20 lb head, and a "professional" model. They are pretty neat, and as was said were often shown in magazines. I also...
