Might not be around for a while

Thanks for your story CLP, it's possibly not for everyone but sharing stories is a great tonic for my grief.

Might not be around for a while

The Anniversary of Amanda' passing was two weeks ago and got through it OK. I seem to be spending most of my time walking my dogs with friends, socialising with friends and family, and driving my new vehicle to visit friends inlacing a few in the country. On my last road trip I even did about...

Anyone Know Where to Get this T-slot Extrusion Used on Commercial Chainsaw Mills?

In Australia that profile is used for highway road sign mounts. I use the heavier duty rail version 44 x 40 mm likethis.

Might not be around for a while

It's now some 8 months since Amanda died and I'm continuing to make progress. I'm only seeing my psyche about once a month and will be changing that to every 6 weeks after the next visit. My family, neighbours and friends also continue to provide amazing support. I've takenover 200 boxes and...

    Milling with new 592XP?

Don't know about Huskies but a senior Stihl Engineer told me that their modern saws are designed to run at WOT straight out of the box. However that was cross cutting not milling so when I got my new 880 I ran 5 tanks through it cutting firewood. You could also easily emulate firewood cutting...

Pushing the limits of Lo Pro

Hi George, Thanks for doing the "milling with the grain experiment" as it is something I have always wanted to do but never did because I suspected the spaghetti string chips would cause problems. When I modded the drive sprocket cover for the 880 on the BIL mill I deliberately made it mostly...

why does this scoring happen when milling but only sometimes?

That effect (more commonly seen on narrow boards) is calked "washboard" and is cause by a "synchronicity" between chain speed, chain cutter setup, speed of cut, board width and wood softness etc. If any one of those factors differs markedly the washboard effect will disappear Here is an...

What do y’all do when this happens to your bar?

I have a 36x6" belt sander that has a fence but before I had that, I did this.

What do y’all do when this happens to your bar?

You need to "dress the bar' - this means grinding the burrs or edges away. To do this you can use a flat file (bar edges are hard so you will need a new file) Out the bar in a vice and stand at one end of the bar place the file at right angles to the bar and grab the file with left and right...

    Chainsaw milling re-invented

My days using a chainsaw mill for milling standard logs are long gone. I have access to two bandsaw mills at my tree lopper dude's place where I mill stuff if I need to.

    First time milling

Good work. When I tackle a piece like this I usually remove some of the thicker end as shown by the thin red line - I just do it with a chainsaw out of the mill. OR Use a frame to raise the end of the log rails as shown by the thick red line. Here is an extreme case.

Anyone transported a chainsaw in commercial checked baggage?

In 2010 I checked a Mac 10-10 (no bar) onto commercial flights from Calgary to Australia (Calgary-SF, SF-Sydney, Sydney-Perth). I removed all the fuel and oil and cleaned it up but even I could still smell a faint odour. No questions asked.

    Chainsaw milling re-invented

If the log is lifted off the ground (eg use a Kangaroo Jack) and sloped (something the Logosol doesn't do - although it could do this) and suitable height handles are used on an Alaskan mill there is far less need to bend over and also less effort is needed as gravity does some of the work. If a...

    Chainsaw milling re-invented

This style of mill is not new as DIY versions of it have been around for long time. Someone from Logosol contracted me about 15? years ago to ask me a bunch of questions about the DIY milling scene here because they were thinking about setting up a branch in Oz. They even asked me if I wanted...

An interesting new approach to safer chainsaw usage - The Branchsaw

My question is, - isn't this posted in the wrong forum?

Thanks everyone. I'm sure your thoughts and best wishes from the other side of the world have helped even if it is in a small way.

Might not be around for a while

Just letting you all know that I have begun to feel bit better and am a bit surprised and even a little guilty at how quickly things have improved. I was seeing my Psych every week and last couple of visits have been every two weeks and am just about to try monthly visits. I've also been...

Might not be around for a while

Taking the dogs for a week on the south coast to escape the city and have a mental health break. Staying with friends on a 300 acre farm. My view from the patio while having a couple of cups of Joe. The farm is next to a National Park so lots of firebreak trails to take the dogs walking...

Might not be around for a while

Thanks LP, Not sure the College would like a copy of my memoir on their shelves. In the book I'm pretty scathing about how the College treated Amanda because Amanda rated her treatment by the college as her number 1 PTSD trigger. Amanda gave 23 years of her life to that place and I'm very angry...

Might not be around for a while

Thanks everyone again for your kind comments. Today, while I was on my way to see a physical therapist about my knees, I stopped off at Amanda's former work place, a private girls college where she was the head librarian for 23 years. Amanda retired from the college under a cloud of stress and...
