    Cheap kiln

I milled boards between 4/4 and 12/4. I am not sure if the warping on the thinner boards is worse, but it is a much bigger problem. If I had a thick slab and i warpped badly, I can plane off a half inch for eah side and still have something usable. Not so with the thinner boards. I had...

    Cheap kiln

I was asked to provide an update - I have only dried a couple of loads with this kiln, but both worked pretty well. It was cheap and really easy. I didn't need to touch it while it was running. The dehumidifier I was running inside of it has a setting for target humidity. At 25%, the...

    Cheap kiln

It worked out great. We had a fairly warm and damp summer, but the little kiln was dry as a bone. Two small fans were the key to keeping the air circulating and the wood drying out quickly. I didn't take exact moisture measurements, but just from the sound of knocking the wood together as...

    Cheap kiln

Good question. I have a household dehumidifer in there and a small fan. The dehumidifer provides a bit of heat an in that small space it really makes a diference. I don't have exact measurements, but when it was in the mid 70s in the garage the inside of the kiln was over a hundred degrees...

    Cheap kiln

I got sick of waiting for slabs to dry out in my basement so I built a really simple kiln. The floor is green treated lumber 16" on center using a 3/4" subfloor plywood. The sides and the top are framed using 2x4s ripped in half as well as 1" thick foam board. Sides and back are just...

My biggest tree to tackle yet - monster white oak

I've killed a saw or two, but not sure about the blow up. I have had an issue with vapor lock when pushing a saw really hard on a hot summer's day. August in Arkansas seems like it could be toasty. Basically as the saw heats up, the gas starts to boil and isn't delivered to the engine...

    Sugar Maple

Try noodling the pieces down to a smaller diameter with a chainsaw. You lose a little bit of the mass but save a ton of effort, especially if the pieces have a lot of knots.

What size should I mill hard maple ?

my 2 cents - If you don't know how you are going to use it, you may want to try slight thicker slabs. 1" thick maple isn't that hard to get, but a well milled bigger piece can be less common and more expensive. A nice thicker slab gives a wood worker some options including resawing the slab to...

Blow up one piston, shame on Stihl. Blow up two pistons, shame on me. Blow up three pistons...?

Great info - thank you. Sounds like a good enough execuse to expand the saw collection.

Timberframed - what manufacturer and model saw are you using? I am definately interested in any saw designed for WOT on a 24/7 basis. Thanks in advance.

    72" panther mill problem

On mine the bolt is flipped the other way - basically the bolt is facing down, not up. You might want to try assembling it. When I tightened mine together it seemed like everything had a bit of give and you might find that as you tighten it that there is enough room for the bolt after all. I...

    72" panther mill problem

I think that is the wrong size bolt. I just got a 42" panther pro and have a lot move space for the washer and bolt. Based on the turn around time you might be better off heading to the big box store and just buy a bolt.

Is There Anything Wrong With This Climbing Picture?

picture #1 - it doesn't say "juicy" on his sweatpants. Nothing says professional like sweatpants. picture #2 - the guy holding the line doesn't have a Labatt blue in his other hand. "Hey you hoser, pull harder, this is a heavy leaner, ehh?" picture #3 - not sure why, but I feel like he should...
