    Solar kiln

Drying it faster would cause the wood to check and split, which is what your trying to avoid isn't it? Even if it took the 3" oak 6 months to kiln dry then yes it alot better that 3 years air drying. :msp_unsure: Here's a link to multiple solar kilns: Solar Wood Drying

    Solar kiln

From what I read on the site is that the solar kiln I linked to was designed for drying red oak, but you still have to monitor the drying process regardless. Look in the section "Monitoring the Process" on the site link. Here is another link that helped with questions for me...

    Solar kiln

You can go to the Virginia Tech website (Design and Operation of a Solar-Heated Dry Kiln - Home - Virginia Cooperative Extension) and there are plans you can download (Building Diagrams - Home - Virginia Cooperative Extension). Seems you may need to add the board (solar collector) that sits...

raising the BSM bed sections on the LT-15

I could have used a bigger tractor 3 weeks ago. A friend was building a horse arena on his property and had 20+ trees, 24 inch dia x 24 foot long that he had to get cut down and his neighbor offered to deliver for a fee.... but no way to offload the trailer. I was willing to pick up three or...

raising the BSM bed sections on the LT-15

Motorseven, since I raised the mill up a couple feet it has been easier on my back and the cleaning under the mill is a breeze... I use the gas blower, works great when I do decide to clean. I get alot of leaves because we have alot of oak trees on the property and you know leaves, they get...

raising the BSM bed sections on the LT-15

Haven't seen this thread in a while but that's okay. The report on the power feeder, I like it. Especially when returning the head back to the cutting position. starting off I was having a problem with it but realized it was the rope that I had put on it. When I went to the two extra bed...

    Best splitter for $1500-1800?

For myself I would rather spend the extra money and buy a Super Split. Their prices may start at $2300+ but I look at the time spent splitting vs waiting for a conventional splitter to cycle. Besides, most people I know that have large log splitters usually have them for a long time, if they're...

    Lumbersmith bandsaw mill

qbilder, aka Eric, one of our members here on the site, uses a Lumbersmith in building pool cues. As a matter of fact he was Lumbersmith's "Smither Of the Month for January". He seems to be doing very well with a Lumbersmith, he has some very impressive pool cues. Here's his first post...

    Shop Porch Cover addition...

I decided to use 3 of the 13 inch x 10 foot Cypress boards that I had milled and stickered back in October. Ran them through the planer... just to use the planer, I could have left them rough cut but.... Look in the back right of the pic for where the Cypress is stacked... please excuse the...

    Shop Porch Cover addition...

Just a few more pics while I was thinking about it... The truck has about 6 to 7 inches clearance right now, after I add the sloped concrete incline from about the drip line I should have about 3-4 inches of clearance pulling the truck in forward or backward. I don't intend on getting the truck...

    L15 question

One rope connected at both ends of the mill to two pulleys on the frame of the mill then the the rope goes up to a crank, wrapped around twice at the crank. The tension on the rope "pulls" the mill along the track. Ted PS: or buy the power feeder like I did, it got a little old cranking on...

    Drying lumber

IMO I would prefer treated wood for the bed on a trailer. I've stepped through a rotten board while unloading a trailer because I used untreated wood on one occasion. Most trailers are not being stored under cover or in a shed and that horizontal surface has more opportunities to degrade...

    Shop Porch Cover addition...

One other thing. I decided to check to see how level or how much sag in the beam. I measured a little less than 3/8" over the entire 24 foot length at the center. So I figure that when I add the front cover board on I'll jack up the center about one inch and screw those boards on, or something...
