    Milling: slabs VS dimensional lumber

$80 an hour is good? I may be undercharging. I charge $75 an hour and let the customer help, if they choose. With good customers that help I often approach 500bf/hr. Paying fuel and blades I'm still pretty happy with that rate. I do not chainsaw mill anything for under $100 (at my...

How much time do I have before milling a pine? An oak?

Oh, and FWIW...I mill all my ugly logs when I need stuff for myself.

How much time do I have before milling a pine? An oak?

Pine off the ground will last a long time. It generally doesn't check.. Bugs will get into the bark, but this generally doesn't matter much if you're milling lumber. Once the bark falls off or becomes very loose the wood may tend to blue, starting at the ends. I've milled logs a few years...

    Milling: slabs VS dimensional lumber

That's not the kind of "slabs" he's referring to. He's talking about wide and thick live edge planks. I'm surprised they're uncommon for you. There's been a good market here.

    Milling: slabs VS dimensional lumber

My opinion is that quartersawing oak is a job for a bandmill....one with hydraulics....and some sort of forklift. While the wood might be worth more quartersawn, you'd be losing your behind on the value of your own time and labor. I'm not entirely sure it'd be worth more, either...

    Making cookies and small lumber

A MS180 will be an excellent saw for cutting lumber. I have a 170 that I use for that...never touches anything but clean, bark free wood. Stays sharp forever. Handy as can be. I wouldn't personally do any milling with one. It's just not the right saw for that. As far as cookies, you can...

Powerhead options for 60" cut capacity

My 661 starts first pull...except one strange day when it gave me a fit for an hour. After dicking with it for what seemed like forever, I slapped the 461 in the big mill and cut some big slabs. I really, really, really like the 661. But after running them side by side in the same log....I...

Powerhead options for 60" cut capacity

It's been crazy Garrit. I started with the small mill and a Husky 460. I now have 36" and 30" Granbergs with a 661 and 461 and a Timberking B20. The pinterest/instagram craze makes chainsaw milling a profitable endeavor. People want chainsaw marks and "live edges" on everything from...

Powerhead options for 60" cut capacity

I run my current mills by my lonesome, and wouldn't want it any other way. When I have others around they're I'm charge of moving wood and sweeping and keeping my wedges and tools out of the sawdust :) That said, I can't imagine running an 87" bar alone, no matter how many powerheads it has...

Powerhead options for 60" cut capacity

Good to know, scheffa. I've not been milling terribly long. Just started in Jan. Just a few months ago I thought 36" was about the limit for my 661, but as I've refined the sharpening I realize that's not the case. The bar is at least 30 days out, and of course I need other parts and...

Powerhead options for 60" cut capacity

Ok, just off the phone with left coast and have an 87"er on order. Bigger than I planned, but I'm so tired of always needing another 1/2 inch!

Powerhead options for 60" cut capacity

    What do you think power-wise, Bob? That is...comparing 2 -661s to 1 -880.

Powerhead options for 60" cut capacity

Folks, I know this has been kicked around a few times....but I am finally going to up my cut capacity to a full 60+". I have a newish 661 and 461...both under 6 months old. I find the 661 to have ZERO problems in 36" hardwood, and I think the 461 would probably do it also, though I haven't...

    Blades for EG50

Anyone have Woodmizer's single blade edger? I have one I bought used, and the previous owner was using a double stack of table saw blades. If anyone has any blade recommendations, please share!

    Snakes in the woodpile

I just mean the ones I've run into don't seem to be terribly aggressive. Neither do the timber rattlers, generally. The moccasins seem the meanest and least likely to retreat. I've stepped over a few copperheads, and they generally just lay there. In fairness, I usually see cottmouths in the...

    Snakes in the woodpile

The Canebrakes can be exceptionally cool, especially when their colors are just right. Cottonmouths are just plain nasty. Before milling I did some beaver removal work. When the water warms up in March in ain't so fun anymore!

    Snakes in the woodpile

Down east NC. This is right between the beach, the hog farms, and the creeks.
