Janka wood hardness vs metal hardness

I'm not sure what I will do with it yet, I just like to own rare things I guess. I also own a piece of Ancient Kauri.

Janka wood hardness vs metal hardness

Ah yes I meant Australian not Austrian, the spell checker had a hard time reading my mind. Thanks for the clarification.

    Firepoker

Ya before I started welding I looked up all the different hand gestures I could have done (some pretty rude but funny), but I wanted it to be practical as well. Pokey, hooky and somewhat family friendly:)

    Firepoker

It's just regular mild steel and bolts. I think it's just the lighting that makes it shine. I will probably end up painting it with high temp black paint.

    Firepoker

I built my wife a new firepoker today. Turned out pretty good. Just thought I would share.

Janka wood hardness vs metal hardness

Thanks Jeff. The Brinell is a similar test to the Janka but it uses a fixed force and measures the indent size in the metal. So not easily converted but I did find a formula for the Brinell test that I was able to plunk the Janka values into. And a found a Brinell calculator here...

Janka wood hardness vs metal hardness

I just received a piece of Austrian Buloke in the mail. Said to be the world's hardest wood with a Janka hardness rating of 5060 lbf. My question is, how hard is this compared to metal? The Janka hardness test measures the force required to push a 11.28mm steel ball halfway into a sample of...

    Homemade Monster Maul!

Sorry about that, but I do have a few more pics of the finished product though. I secured the head on it, painted it and did a protective carbon fiber and Kelvar wrap on it.

    Homemade Monster Maul!

I was worried about the edges as well, but it turns out that they actually help. It stops the maul from passing right through the wood and into the chopping block or ground. Makes it easier to pick it back up over your head. It's kind of a novelty, a right of passage for my friends, but it does...

    Custom waterjet chainsaw bar

I think this would look great! I do some of my best chainsawing in the pitch black:)

    Custom waterjet chainsaw bar

Yep, I thought about jetting the Stihl brand name, or other cool or humorous sayings into the bar, the only problem is that the words are mirrored when viewed from the other side. I also thought of the epoxy idea that someone suggested, and I like that other than the fact that if it was done...

    Custom waterjet chainsaw bar

Thanks Eric. I don't think I want to try and water jet a spot welded bar. I also don't want to waste too much money attempting this. I wanted to start with a cheap bar. https://www.amazon.com/Stihl-Chainsaw-Guide-Part-B120A0LSSN/dp/B01FSYSF22 It says it has a laminate sprocket, does this mean...

    Custom waterjet chainsaw bar

I'm thinking of water jetting an artistic pattern into my chainsaw bar and am wondering if it can be done. I would choose a pattern that would minimize the loss of structural integrity, but I am also wondering if the metal in the center of a bar is solid, laminated or riveted together? Anyone...

    Construction of dad's log cabin

Wow, what a great build, and a great addition to this world. That cabin will be enjoyed for generations!

    Homemade Monster Maul!

Hi Ironman, yes I thought about doing that, knocking the shoulders off, but I wanted to try it first with them on. Perhaps you don't want it to pass right through the wood and bury itself six inches into the ground. And if the wood hits the shoulders the wood should already be split. Either way...

    Homemade Monster Maul!

I just made myself a monster maul and thought I would share. It's made by welding three wedges together then pinning and welding them to a 16lb fence post sledge. The finished head weight is 20.4lbs. I know I can swing it, but I haven't tried it yet. Can't wait! The wife thinks it looks like a...

    2x4 woodshed

I like it very much, it looks like an old homesteader cabin. It's really hard to guess it's age. If I had to, I would say 15 years old with repairs on the roof in the last 5. Of course it looks more like 70 years old. Good work. I like the rough cut, reclaimed beams and the over all patina. Our...

    2x4 woodshed

Good work on the woodshed/tractor storage. Nice clean sturdy design. I must admit that I am curious as to the two other structures in the background:)
