My answer to the Wood Insert

I'm sure I missed something somewhere along the line, but you actually took an insert out of the fireplace to make that contraption and you think you're somehow ahead?:jawdrop: For starters, can I have anything of value left after the fire? The point about the high risk of CO poisoning is...

    best dump lift style

The telescopic lift will give you the most oompf to start the load lifting. I would say that in the weight range you are considering though, a good scissor lift would be the best choice. Make sure it's double acting (not gravity down). I would stay away from the dual cylinder set up.

    jap beetles

If you're looking to keep them out of the house or another area, I have heard that a "tea" made from bay leaves works well. Mix up a strong batch and spray the perimeter of the area you want to keep them out of.

    Cost of Cutting Firewood

Those are great points Logbutcher. The way I see it, if you have access to free wood as a byproduct of some other activity (logging your land, cutting trees for $, taking down free and easy trees, etc...), you may be able to make some money. If you have to buy your wood in log form and...

Stihl is WAYY better than Huskie

I joined the party late, but just couldn't help but chime in. (the rant is on) It kills me that some people think it's their right to know what a retailer pays for his or her goods and then thinks they should have the right to tell that person whats a fair profit to make on a sale. The...

To those that do and don't know him......

I can't say that I know Dave or his son, but 42 is just too early for God to call a son home. Prayers for Ron and the family he left behind.

Stihl is WAYY better than Huskie

Personally not loyal to any brand, just to quality. When I find something I like that works well (chainsaw, car, electronics, etc...), I'll usually stick with that manufacturer until they give me a reason no to. By the way, everyone knows Dolmar is simply the best  ;)

    Who makes the "crappiest" chainsaws????

Shadow, if these topics piss you off so much, why read them and respond? Just curious. Every level or class of saw probably has its crap, along with the winners. I'm sure not every pro saw in a class is created equal, just like all homeowner saws are not equal in quality. My little Poulan...

What wood species would you choose if you could?

So far, the best stuff I've found is the free stuff ;)

Can this weekend warrior get by with just one saw? + tree pics

I was in a similar position. Have a little Poulan that was fine for keeping the yard clean, until I started burning to heat the house. That left me needing to replace the poulan with a bigger saw. I was trying to find the perfect one saw will do it all solution and what I found is that it...

    Firewood vs pickup window

I've only taken out one; and that was a buddys truck, oops. We were out camping and one of my buddies and I took another guys truck to cut some wood for that nights fire. We were cutting approximately 6' lengths and loading them in the truck to take back to camp. The last one went right...

    Chainsaw recommendations

If this is more or less a one time thing, you may want to just rent a saw (I can't believe I just typed that;) ). Check out your local Home Depot, they have pretty reasonable rental rates; they also sell used rental equipment. Their saws are Makitas, which are really Dolmars in a green...

    what saw should I buy?

How about a Crapsman electric, and then cut the cord off. They are much safer that way. Don't forget to drink your PPE (personal party enhancer) :buttkick:

If Dolmar is so good, then why so few dealers?

I have to agree with spike that the brand recognition is not there with the homeowner crowd. I would not have known about Dolmar, if not for this site (and I have a dealer a mile from my house). In searching for a 5100 locally, I found that all the Dolmar dealers in my area focused on the...

5100 -- Compresion Release or Not

There's no doubt that it would make starting easier; I just never found it hard to start in the first place. You make a good point about older folks. The weight of the 5100 makes it a great choice for them and the easier starting would be a good option.

I want to buy a *REALLY* good chain saw. Suggestions?

There are a number of Dolmar dealers in my area and none of them had a 5100s in stock either. In fact, when I asked for the 5100s two of them handed me a 510 and said "here ya go". It seems none of the local dealers have any real experience with that model. I finally decided to go on the...

5100 -- Compresion Release or Not

I've never had any trouble starting or re-starting my 5100s. On that little saw, I don't think the decomp is really necessary. I think Dolmar does put it on some of their similar homeowner saws like the 510. Don't know what the logic is there, but it's a moot point; you don't need it.

I want to buy a *REALLY* good chain saw. Suggestions?

No doubt, but you might as well drop the dime on the better saw and then learn how to use it. I don't have a problem with him saying that he doesn't know how to sharpen a chain, as long as he plans to learn. Everyone has to start somewhere.

    Pimp my saw

I feel like I'm turning into a shill for Dolmar, but I really like the 5100s I just picked up. Not enough time on it yet to tell how it will hold up, but it's hands down better than the junk I've had in the past. If there's a Dolmar dealer in your area I'd look at that one. Nothing wrong...
