Milled Some White Oak Last Month

That’s the fine line you walk. The best slaps generally need epoxy work. It’s appealing to the ones who know how to do it. It’s a process but also an art form.

Milled Some White Oak Last Month

I’m running into the same deal on a similar sized sugar maple. Looked promising…nope 2 trees on the inside. Tons of character though so makes up for it.

    Auxiliary Oiler on Alaska mills

I ended up using an old tire valve stem setup and removed the little needle in the stem. This leaves a small orifice and seems to let the oil drip out instead of run out. Running a single ms880 and a 72” bar I definitely notice when it’s on. I figured worst case more oil is better than no oil.

    Ladder question ???

Could setup something off 2 rungs on the ladder like this idea. A threaded rod to adjust and apply resistance as the saw approaches the middle. As you get to the rod remove it, cut, and replace as soon as you’re by it.

MY STIHL 066 DUAL PORT BILLET MUFFLER

How much for one of these? I have to have one haha. Beautiful work

What chainsaw bar in your opinion is the longest lasting ?

I think it’s going to be a tough argument, most don’t wear out bars. Someone who does a lot of milling or cuts timber for a living will have the best answer. My cannon bars for milling show significantly less wear than a Oregon I use for firewood…that has probably 1/20th of the time in the cut...

Small time CS milling - Equipment and techniques

I prefer running 30 degree angles, let’s me use all my chains for more than just milling. If I have the horsepower it really cuts and throws some sawdust. I think finish is a moot argument, either way the wood has to be further finished anyway. If I can cut fast with non milling angles then I’d...

Small time CS milling - Equipment and techniques

Just tell the artist guy you’re making art too. .404 chain holds up a little better to nails. Doesn’t seem to get as wrecked.

Small time CS milling - Equipment and techniques

If the wind is in my favor then sawdust buildup isn’t an issue, otherwise I have to pull back and wipe the 2x8 free a few times. The saw doesn’t vibrate at all and the rollers make it super smooth, almost no effort to push it along. It really is a nice setup. I’m about 1/8” off if I cut about...

Small time CS milling - Equipment and techniques

I have ran into the same guide board issue. I have a home made vertical mill to use in making beams and lumber, I just ripped a 2x8 to fit between the rails. They’re around 7” I believe. My cut was a little arrow and allows some play between the frame, but on top of that it has warped over time...

Post pictures of your woodpile/splitting area

Always, although the excavator setting big fir rounds works too haha

Post pictures of your woodpile/splitting area

I now want to flip my splitter upside down…especially for those big rounds

    Milling a figured maple beam

Added some shorter sections to cut into table legs later. Spalted maple legs would be a unique feature!

    Milling a figured maple beam

Haven’t really messed with it much, hasn’t had a need to really. I’ve got the Granberg for my horizontal cuts and the homemade unit for vertical cuts. I suppose I could build a different base to roll along if I wanted to cut anything at angles. Like take a 8x8 and cut it in half at a 45° angle...

    Milling a figured maple beam

Decided to follow along as I milled this beam up today. Nice color throughout the log, but that awkward size where it’s not quite wide enough for slabs. I’ve done dimensional lumber like 1x8” boards with stuff like this before. I decided I might as well cut the largest beam I can and can always...

My first slabs are coming out ok (pic), but I need basic advise...

There’s a sweet spot for the saw you’ll find, it’s definitely higher in the rpm range. You want to apply enough pressure to get a load on the saw but not big it down. You’ll find it it cut the smoothest and fastest in that sweet spot. I’ve found bogging down and messing in that lower rpm range...
