new house came with woodstove keep or swap?

Thanx, I've been using the old one and it works fine. Downloaded a manual and it works even better. The heat output is more and it is a "better looking" stove. It's likely the catalytic combustor hasn't been replaced so I may replace that. We are in Juneau, Alaska where it is cold and wet...

new house came with woodstove keep or swap?

Just moving into our new house and it came with a Blaze King "Royal Heir" We brought our Blaze King "Princess" from our old place. The Princess treated us well and is only two years old. The Royal Heir is an 1985 model but also catalytic as is the Princess. The Royal Heir has a bigger fire...

got my first load of the season

Good luck on your hunt! The hunting here is awesome. I'm just outside Yellowstone National Park so lots and lots (and lots) of elk. Also mule deer and white-tail deer and pronghorn antelope. Mountain goat, moose, and bighorn sheep if lucky enough to draw a permit (I have a bighorn ram permit...

got my first load of the season

I could have put a few more logs on but ran out of time. It's only a 10 mile drive from my house and I need lots more wood so I'll be back.

got my first load of the season

It's not hunting season yet but archery season for deer and elk does start in a month! Hunt in the morning and saw in the afternoon. It's mostly lodgepole pine and Douglas fir that we have to burn. No hardwoods to speak of.

    Telephone Poles

Telephone poles are often treated with either creosote or CCA (Copper Chromated Arsenic) - both are serious cancer-causing substances. You probably already wear gloves but I'd also recommend wearing a dust mask to keep that stuff out of your lungs.

    reminder: CLEAN YOUR CHIMNEY

Well, I just discovered that the chimney cleaner I hired left me with a clogged pipe....found it out the hard way. Couldn't get the fire to start tonight...no draft at all. So I moved the stove out from under the pipe and ran an electricians wire snake up it. There was a plug of...

    reminder: CLEAN YOUR CHIMNEY

Dibbs and/or Joecool85 -Thanx for fixing the link to the pic. I'm guessing that it was maybe 10 cords of seasoned (standing dead for a few years) lodgepole and Douglas Fir. It was a long/cold winter here in Montana and used the stove as our primary heating source. Due to a new baby last fall...

    reminder: CLEAN YOUR CHIMNEY

Here's a picture of our dirty chimney pipe. It was installed last summer and hadn't been cleaned at all until now (one full season of burning pine/fir - 10+ cords). It was a mix of ash and creosote that came out easily with one pass of the brush

    Need opinion from wood sellers

Correct me if I'm wrong but from the sounds of it this wood is on public land (BLM, Forest Service or state). Maybe you already know this but: If it is on public land you'll need a commercial firewood permit to harvest the wood and sell it. I'd recommend talking with the land management agency...

What price log truck load of dead for firewood?

I hear ya. There was a 50,000 acre burn just across the valley from me last summer. Alot is accessible and the FS said they'll be opening it to firewood cutters. It's about a 15 drive so the gas shouldn't be too bad. I'll have to wait and see how that pans out otherwise, you hit the nail on...

What price log truck load of dead for firewood?

Thanx for the response. Maybe because it's lodgepole small-medium diameter he figures he gets 17-20 cords / load? But that seems a stretch if the conversion is 2.8 mbf / cord and the truck can get 4.5-5 mbf on it then it would be 12.6-14 cords / load so 13 is right in there. If I go this route...

What price log truck load of dead for firewood?

Talked with a guy today who brings the dead trees out (from green tree sales) and sells them bucked and split for firewood ($135/cord). He said he would sell me a truckload log-length lodgepole pine w/ some Douglas fir for $1300 (delivered). Depending on tree diameter (10-20") he figured 17 to...

Would you like chainsaws if they didn't make noise?

The OSHA limit, at which hearing damage occurs after too much exposure, is 90 decibels (dB). Assuming the saw is putting out noise at 110 decibels (about the same as a pneumatic drill, typical rock concert, Steel Mill, riveting, auto horn at 3 feet), OSHA's maximum daily exposure is 30 minutes...

Tank vs Tankless hot water heater.

I'm getting geared up to start making an outbuilding into an in-law cabin and been researching this for a while. The gas tankless can be mounted inside or out but does need to be vented. There are direct vent models (sealed combustion) which still have to be vented but with a different set...
