Old Logging Pics From Vancouver Island........

This is from the Woss area north of Campbell River and shows a dump truck being moved across a valley on a skyline. And this one shows a railway trestle being constructed many years ago in the same area. This area was logged by Canfor over many years and was the last operating railway logging...

Some Recent Carvings From Our Annual Competition..

Here are a few photos by old friend Karen Wasilenchuk taken last week. This uses the grain well. Octopus A winged Griffin. JR Henderson ink. I went to high school with this guy's Dad many years ago. Those tats are all family and clan related and it took a few sessions to get like that. I...

Gold River Logging circa 2008........video by Paul Laviolette

Ran across this so thought I'd throw it up here. I worked at the Gold River Logging Division from 1969 to 1973 and boy, were things different then. Grapple yarding was just coming in and almost all our machines were line-types rather than the prevalent hydraulic oriented ones used today. Never...

A Little Logging History From Vancouver Island....Video..

Don't know if this was ever posted here previously but I suspect some of you loggers would enjoy this five minutes long video documenting the falling, transporting by truck then shipping overseas a pretty good "pole". From Copper Canyon on Van Isle to England via ship. Check the size of our...

    Take The Porsche For A Ride........He said........So I Did.

My pal Peter and his wife are in Arizona and I look after their affairs while they are away. One of these chores is driving his pickup and his Porsche Cayman S now and then. I took his Porsche out a week ago and he was really happy because he hates the idea of it sitting there doing nothing. The...

Chainsaw Carvings From Our 2016 Show......

For a number of years now we've had a competition for chainsaw carvers and today I rode down to Willow Point and took a few pics. Here's an homage to the old-time fallers who used "misery whips" to fall timber. Back when men were men and sheep were nervous. And here are the old...

Some Pics Of Our Local Carving Event....Transformations By The Sea..

Annually there is a well attended log carving event held just south of Campbell River at Willow Point called Transformations By The Sea. Here are a few pics I took yesterday of some of the pieces. Some of these just blow my mind as I'm not very artistic at all and what some of these people do...

Pics From Recent Carving Event Here.......

For a number of years now there has been the Transformations on the Shore event held at Willow Point, a few miles south of Campbell River. As always I'm blown away by the works created from a log of wood and some tools. Here's a few pics of some of the entries. Really neat how the...

Some Bad Pics Of Great Carvings And Stuff...

Always blows my mind what some people can create starting with a bit of log. Here's the raw material used in our most recent local competition. I'll apologize up front for the poor quality but I had my dog on a leash and it was hard to get steady or even get close to some of the pieces...

    Logging Above The Fog.....

Summertime and the fog hangs low in the inlets along the coast. Up above the fog it can be sunny and hot and nowadays that's where a lot of the timber is. Here's a grapple yarder somewhere up around Holberg I suspect. Looks like they've got a few pieces to pull yet too. :msp_biggrin...

    A One Tree Load....pic

It's claimed this is all from but one tree making this load. I once saw a three piece load on an off-highway truck with 14' bunks go through the yard at Gold River, about 1970 or so. Not a lot of those left anymore. Take care.

    Forestry Related Coastal Marine pics.....

Living where I do I see lots of marine traffic and one thing I've noticed is the use of flat booms again. Hardly ever saw them when barges ruled the coast but I see them often nowadays. Lots of traffic headed to and from Alaska too. Here's a load of sawdust on a Seaspan barge headed...

    Back In The Day.......Waaaaaay Back....

Back before powersaws there were handsaws..........big handsaws. With these saws and some oversized axes undercuts like this were cut. Big axes?? Yep, we got big axes. Once you got the sucker down the work began, cutting it into "logs." One "log" took a lot of...
