    Noodling and Chain wear

It's all in the direction of the fibers in the wood. Keep in mind the wood fibers run longways in the log. When you noodle, you're going in the same direction as the fibers, which is much easier. That's the same reason wood splits when you hit it on the end with an ax, but doesn't when you hit...

is a tooth sprocket or rim sprocket better?

Not sure what you have, or what you're trying to accomplish, but I'll attempt a generic answer. Rim sprocket vs. the tooth sprocket: Rim. Because they're very inexpensive and easy to change. You mentioned upgrading to an 8, which tells me you're running a 7 now. I carry both and change them...

    Bench Mount Filling Tool

Got one and love it. It is very well built and does a very good job holding the file height and angle consistent, and all adjustments are easily made. The big thing I like about it over one of the ones that clamp on the bar is you can do several chains without having to install each one on a...

    MS310 outside spike w/ pics

Just installed the 361 dual spike/roller catcher kit on a 310. When I was searching for info on this I didn't see anything specific and thought this might help some who might want to try it. The first order of business was to ditch the 310's plastic clutch cover and install an aluminum...

    440 DP Muffler cover

Technically, it would be a violation of warranty, as it is a modification to the stock exhaust system. I think it would be up to the individual dealer if he wanted to make issue of it. I think a reasonable dealer would provide warranty service for most issues anyway. Though I wouldn't expect...

    440 DP Muffler cover

The DP covers make all the difference in the world, and yes, they just bolt right on. I ran the 460 for awhile with out one for awhile , then couldn't believe the difference once I put it on. My 440 and 660 both had their dual port covers installed before the first drop of gas hit the tank...

    Depth Guage Question

I set them at .030 for most use. .025 for small saws or regular saws with long bars. .025 for all square filed chain. Add .005 when the cutter gets filed pretty far back - seems to cut better. I played around with .035 - too aggressive for my taste. It was grabby & hard to hold rev's...

    ms310.......

I'm doing the same thing for a friend, but am concerned about bolting it to a plastic cover. Looks like the aluminum cover off of a 260/440/660 will work. Part # 1125 648 0460. Anybody have one of these for sale? There is an aluminum one off of an 036 on ebay right now, part number...

    Chain sharpening Jig?

I have the Stihl bench mount guide and highly reccomend it. I think filed chains cut much better than ground, but I'm like you - I don't want to mount every chain on a saw to sharpen it. While this guide is admittedly very expensive (around $160), I can't imagine being without it. It works...

    what stihl chain would

I have both .325 and 3/8 set-ups for mine. When limbing I like the .325 better, as it seems smoother. Don't really know why - perhaps the cutters are closer together? The 3/8 just seems a little aggressive when cutting the smaller stuff. I only run 3/8 because you can't get square filed full...

    Hand Sharpen NEW Chain?

If you're just killing time, you might kick around the idea of doing the depth gages on new chain as well. I have noticed some chains with a lot of variation. Usually come @ .025" +/- .005. I put them @ .030 for the big saws, .025 for the smaller ones. I think it makes a difference...

    HS-75 Hedge trimmer sharpening

My dealer told me it's better to just replace them. But in the back of my mind, I'm thinking, "Anything can be sharpened!" I've heard elsewhere it can be done, but I haven't found anyone near me locally that can do it. I'm guessing they would have to be surface ground?? I'm going to have to...

    Another Square grind ?

I have a loop of .325 RS that I converted to square by hand. It took a long time, but it' absolutely rips! It only comes out for special occasions, though. I have 3/8 square that I run most of the time - something I can replace by saying "Please order a loop of RSLK" instead of spending...

Who's Good at Grinding Square Chisel Chain?

I feel your pain. Square filing can be tedious enough as it is when you haven't hit anything . I'm working on one for a friend that didn't even hit anything - he just let it go too long. About 30 strokes per cutter to get back to a sharp corner. If I wasn't close to done, that baby'd be goin...

    Best Firewood Based on Aroma

Cherry and hickory are my favorites. But NOTHING beats the smell of cooking ribs over a combination of apple, cherry, hickory and white oak.

    ms460 rpm

I run an 8 on mine with the 25" bar on, but 28" and over gets 7 pin. But I cut strictly hard-wood.

    Stihl 441 and 460 comparison

Hit the search and you'll find lots from people who have the 441. Some really like it, some really don't. Everybody likes their 460, though. The 441 is supposed to have better anti-vibe, better filtration, use less gas, be more modern, etc. But I'm just paroting what I've read here on...

    grinding the rizers ??

If time allows, I set them on new chains. Of course, if time does not allow, I just slap 'em on and go. I am surprised at the variationn I find. They seem to come set @ .025 +/- .005. I typically put them @ .030" using the Stihl depth gage tool & a file. I played with .035 a bit, but...

    What's your best score ever?

Cherry MS361 @ pawn shop: $179 Previous owner dumped it because it was "Junk". Needed a new bar/chain because the poor mis-informed previous owner put strait premix oil in the oil tank. P/C looked brand new. Got a few tanks through it. Runs like a top.
