Any opinions on the timberline sharpener?

    New saw chain

I generally use a older Granberg File n Joint I'vbe had for a long time with a 7/16" file. I'm usually only needing to file once a trip.

    New saw chain

Either would work here with what I'm cutting but I'm only running a 24 inch bar.

    New saw chain

Well I just put my last chain on at the end of last season I believe they were purchased from Baileys a while back. I'll check the local saw shops for some of the 72JGX if it's around. I cleaned up my bar today and basically was getting the saw set up for next year. I should likely grab another...

    New saw chain

Wondering what the best replacement for my current chains is. My old chains are Oregon 72LGX but the cutters are a couple filings away from being worn out. I saw the new stuff is 72DPX is that what I should be going with? I'm set up with sharpening for semi-chisel. Mainly doing firewood here in...

    Quadrafire 4300 opinions?

I have a 3100i I've had for more than 10 years. If I had to buy again I would likely go with something catalytic for the burn times but it's been a very good stove. Everyone is right, you have to have very good seasoned wood for it to work right and the way you load the stove makes a difference.

How Much Heat is in One Pound of Wood? by Sam Foote, P.Eng

Actually the typical excess O2 (Not excess air) for solid fuels is 5-7% and for oil or gas about 3%. There are exceptions of course but for newer industrial boilers this is typical. Reread the article he talks about excess air, not excess oxygen.

    Steel toe boots

I have Georgia Boots with the stacked heel and a set of Timberlands which aren't a full length boot. The timberlands are more comfortable but I like both sets for different reasons.

How many of you wear eye protection ?

I always wear my woodsman helmet and my Ansi approved safety prescription glasses with side shields. Saved myself a lot of grief by doing so I don't know how many times I've had big sharp things bounce off my glasses or helmet shield but it's a lot.

    Chimney Flashing question

Do you have some pictures of where you are flashing? I did my chimney this year after having to do a major roof repair since the last people to flash my house did a terrible job. I didn't use specific pitch flashing but had my own bent custom which was very cheap actually.

    Quadra-fire controls ?'s

As far as I know the timer is supposed to pull the self start rod closed which is the same function as the 3100i ACT startup air. How are you loading your wood? What size splits are you using? How much are you trying to heat?

What I like about cutting Willow

That makes a lot of sense, for me Doug Fir and larch is a 10-12 mile drive so the time and gas isn't substantially different.

What I like about cutting Willow

Poplar is a hybrid willow, typically cross-bred for specific characteristics. It sounds like Poplar you were dealing with.

What I like about cutting Willow

You think it's better than Doug Fir or Larch? The little of it I've burned didn't seem better.

Two hubs and two sets of rear brakes later

I ended up buying the special socket for the rear hub the other day. I paid about 22 bucks at the local Napa. I was kind of shocked that the tool was cheaper than the seal itself by a factor of two (when purchased locally). Just curious, why would you need to remove the hub to do brakes...

Two hubs and two sets of rear brakes later

Because the seal on the hub had leaked oil into the drum it came right off. I'm betting if there were no seal leak that would have been an issue. The drums themselves looked really good on the inside with no pitting or scoring and very little wear. I need to pull the front wheels later this...

Two hubs and two sets of rear brakes later

If I was buying a complete brake rebuild I might consider it, in this case I wanted to have the parts on hand and ended up buying them locally. When I do the front calipers in a year or so I'll likely order from them. Next order of business on the truck is a tune up and oil change which the...

Two hubs and two sets of rear brakes later

Yeah the Sterling 10.25. From what I understand it's an excellent heavy duty setup and until now it's been rock solid hauling heavy loads of wood and home project stuff. The seals on the rear end are at least 10 years old so them failing really isn't that surprising.

Two hubs and two sets of rear brakes later

If it's something planned I'll keep that in mind. I usually buy parts locally for basic stuff but I have it bookmarked now. I've been buying a lot of parts from autozone since they have a warranty they keep on a file and a record of purchases. That really came in handy with the brakes on my...
