    problem with new bar/chain combo

unless clearcoat is magnetic, which I'm sure its not, the clump of shavings on my bench that I picked up with a magnet must have been bar metal, or my utility knife, and my knife edge looks too good for the pile of shavings to be from it only. That's why I'm frustrated with this bar, for the...

    problem with new bar/chain combo

Thanks for your replies, that was the kind of info I was hoping to find from someone who had used these same bars. I've scraped enough clearcoat out of the groove that for now it appears that I'm scraping mostly bar metal out, and its still too tight in several places. I don't have an old .050...

    problem with new bar/chain combo

I bought them as a package from a reputable sponsor of this site. I now have two sets with the same problem, since I called once to return the first set and they promptly sent out a replacement set. Since its the weekend I can't call them again, so I thought I'd ask here if there was any way...

    problem with new bar/chain combo

I recently bought a bar/chain combo and even though its a 0.058 bar and 0.058 chain, the bar groove is too narrow to run the chain properly. To give you an idea how tight it is, I can force two links into the groove, and then hold the 20" bar in the air by the remainder of the chain. Some...

    Deere partners up with Honda

FWIW, where I live the Stihl dealers salesmen barely know which end of the saw to hold onto. Ask them any technical question like what's the HP rating on a MS??? and they're stumped. Any parts, even carb rebuild kits are 3-5 days special order typically. I've never tried their service teams...

    Advice On a Saw

Not sure if anyone else suggested this, I didn't see it in the few replies I read, but would you consider a used saw? For similar money you could get a pro level used saw, if you're not in any hurry to buy and check places like Craigslist regularly. I found a 357xp this way a few years...

Were to buy muriatic acid. is there different concentrations?

I use gallons of it for my pool PH, and there are two different concentrations that I have found. The pool stores carry the stronger one, which is in the range you mention, 30-something%. Home Depot, typically has the lower concentration one, which is about half the stronger concentration. I...

    Rebuilt 357XP problems

Yep, that's your problem. Some of the older 357xps had the auto decomp system, a hose ran from the nipple in your picture up to the side port in the cylinder where the decomp valve was located. I have one of the saws with this system, and I recently plugged it off because it developed a crack...

    Husky 357xp question

I had a problem with mine recently, the rubber hose that runs between the valve and the cylinder base developed a crack. I replaced it with the plug that screws into the side of the cylinder, and blocked off the connector to the lower cylinder port with a short piece of hose and a plastic plug...

OT: seeking advice on manual pole saw options

Funny you should mention that, I had the same option available to me. I have a 16' pole in two sections that I use for sweeping the pool. At the full 16' extension its a bit flimsy, but at 14.5-15' its as stiff as the fiberglass poles. I tried attaching it to a Jameson head, it slid in a...

OT: seeking advice on manual pole saw options

Yeah, I've got a 12' one now and its getting just a tad short as the trees grow taller. 15-16' is probably all I really need, but since the 6' poles are the most common I figure I'll go for 3 of those and whenever I need more than 12' I'll be sure I have more than enough reach with 18'. The...

OT: seeking advice on manual pole saw options

I have a lot of palm trees on my property and need to get a new extension pole saw. Would like to get some opinions here on whether I should go with the 6' fiberglass sections, or with one of the aluminum telescoping models. The fiberglass sections are cheaper, I can get 18' reach for about...

anybody heard of an age requirement to purchase 2-stroke oil?

Nope, I'm an old fart too, so if someone had been ringing up my stuff it would have probably gone unnoticed. But since it was a self-serve line the register flashed some kind of warning that required an override by a living, breathing employee. I couldn't believe it. The way this country is...

anybody heard of an age requirement to purchase 2-stroke oil?

Went to the local big box store for some oil and while checking out at the self-serve aisle my purchase was temporarily halted until an employee could verify I was 18 yrs old or older. Never heard of this before, is this a new Calif law, or did somebody at Lowe's screw up a computer database entry?

    357xp running again !

Got home from work, poured a little fuel in the cylinder, and it started and ran a bit. Poured some mix in the fuel tank and I'll be damned if it didn't run normally after a couple pulls, go figure. I dried it out yesterday and that didn't seem to help. Had it upside down pulling the...

spark, gas, compression, but still won't start, what next??

Fish, First, I appreciate your trying to help me, so I'm not going to get into an argument over this, its not worth it. But I did dry out the saw, I'm not sure why you don't think I did. It didn't help. You asked me to pull the muffler so you could "see the scored piston" or something to...

spark, gas, compression, but still won't start, what next??

I'm not sure what advise you're referring to anymore. A lot of people have suggested things that I've already covered, they just didn't read the other posts that covered it (can't say I blame them, there's too many of them). Fish is all upset because he thinks I never dried out the flooding...

spark, gas, compression, but still won't start, what next??

Yeah, considering the shape of the piston I was expecting a better number also. I used a small bungee to hold the throttle open, made sure the choke was off, so I'm pretty sure I was getting good cylinder filling. I do have the service manual that's commonly available online. This saw has...
