Is logging still a viable career path?

But, I ****ed up by not running fast from the stump. Just backed away briskly while watching it play out, big no no.

Is logging still a viable career path?

This is how I just about killed myself in the woods. Tried knocking a springy elm over with a rather large oak. The elm never went, just sprung the oak back at me and caught me good. Happened so fast I had absoolutely not a second to react. After 4 years or so, that scenario still plays out...

Is logging still a viable career path?

Been lurking for a long while. Interested how its going.

    blocking down onto tiles/pavers

That statement can be true sprinkled in with a lot of ********. If you have the right ground guys standing around, cutting and chucking pieces can be a far quicker method to remove a tree. I find young guys, not that you're young blakes, over rigging, too many blocks, too many pulleys, too...

Need advice on wood loading trailer for buisness expansion.

Nice truck and crane Mike. That's a similar setup that I've always had in mind to purchase for myself. I could do a lot of different jobs and make money in different ways with a setup like that. Obviously you control the hiab from the ground with joystick control?

Need advice on wood loading trailer for buisness expansion.

Don't know. A trailer with a Prentice loader perhaps, or a loader such as a swinger or JCB with a grapple would be worth looking into. A loader would be nice because in addition to being able to load larger logs, you can haul brush as well.

    Boot time

I got a pair of thourogood logger/lineman pole climbers. They're made in the USA and they're a damn fine boot.

Climbing vs bucket which is better

I mean your advice is spot on. Would do the kid some good to work for one or two local shops, learn some climbing and rigging techniques, save his pennies, then venture out on his own when he's a bit older and has a better idea on work practices, job bidding, etc...

    Gaffs for gimpy fat guy

As a climber who specializes in large and or technical removals, ive clocked thousands of hours on spikes. I didn't say the geckos were not good spikes, they certainly are. Ive used just about every brand there is. To me, based on price, you could get a set of kleins and a throwball/throwline...

    Gaffs for gimpy fat guy

Don't waste your money with geckos or fancy caddy pad just get some kleins. Also, why come in here with such a holier than thou attitude? Based on your original post, according to the content and description of it anyway, I don't think big removals was giving you ****, but you assume he...

It's all good, I didn't exactly explain anything in roping to you, just told ya to grab it, i'm ready! It went pretty good though, cept for the ceramic rabbit that I decapitated!

Yeah you're right Bob, I am pretty loveable. I hate the label arborist. I consider myself a tree worker. I take em down, any way I can. Arborists are more the nip plucking crab apple and magnolia types. BTW, my hand has swollen even more, looks like a ****ing catchers mitt.

    GLTPA Logging Congress

Yeah I suppose it has, not as bad as some years not too long ago. I guess if I logged everyday I'd take notice of it more. I've had one day off due to rain at the tree company I work for so far all year.

wow, that's a monster silver maple! Those can be fun to climb and remove, sometimes. Lots of ups and downs. Good work.

    GLTPA Logging Congress

We've gotten a fair amount, but it hasn't been drastic. They're calling for rain for the next 4 days around here though.

    GLTPA Logging Congress

Thanks, we will. Any excuse to get away for a couple of days (as much as I deeply love them all!) from my wife and two little girls is fine with me. It's an extra added bonus if it's forestry/timber/tree work related!
