How many have not played Santa, and cleaned out their chimneys yet?

Guess I'll try to do it Sunday. Thanks for the reminder. Dan.

Which PTO logging winch would you recommend for a 40 HP tractor (33 at PTO)?

Fransgard v-3507. Been a very good winch. Do your self and your tractor a favor and get a self releasing pully (block). Keeps your tractor pulling streight and on the trail. Dan.

    Split 'em or burn 'em?

I split by hand so.....anything that's splitting well I keep going with it to about 4". If it's knotty I'll keep it round up to 6 or 7 inches. I cut off of my own wood lot so I bring the branches down to 1 or 2 inches. Just makes for a neater job left in the woods. Dan.

Should I have a damper on my woodstove?

I'm not familiar with your stove but modern air tights shouldn't require a damper. I thought I might need one a few years back but it turns out my stove top thermometer was way off. I put an in flue thermometer and just go by that. I didn't need a damper at all. I can adjust it fine by the...

    Beech question

Most of the Beech around here (Northern Maine) was hit with Beech bark disease years ago so I burn a lot of it. Cut and split now it will be ready by next fall. Most of it splits well with a maul, especially when it's cold. Dan.

True or False??? A cord of rounds...

Old pulp cutter once told me they would place the bottom row angled slightly and angle the next row slightly the other way. Angle left, angle right and so on. Thus, the wood sat on the top, or high point of the sticks under it and not in the "valley". He claimed it would make quite a...

    Can firewood be too dry?

I get a much lower reading when I check a piece on the end. I check the middle along the grain. Splitting like MikePA said would be even better I would think. Dan.

    tractor or skidder

I logged with a skidder back in the '80's. I now use a 30 hp Kubota with a Fransgard winch to cut firewood on my lot and I couldn't be happier with it. The reduced power forces me to put more thought into the way I drop the trees but I think it is the way to go in a small operation. One...

    Stacked cord versus "thrown cord"

I have a Dodge 1500 (1/2 ton). I once hauled 2 loads of sand for a concrete project and the plant would weigh you light then loaded. First load I went until the rubber snubbers for my leaf springs made contact. Maybe a little more. 1900lbs. +/-. Didn't like that ride at all!! Next load I...

    Woodstove Recommendations?

I'm heating 1550 sq." in northern Maine with a Hearthstone Heritage that I really like. This will be my 3rd year. I'll let the stove temp get up to 400 to 500 when it's cold out. Not saying that any other stove could not do it but I burn a lot of Aspen. It burns hot and fast but the mass of...

    Split green wood or seasoned

I like it green. Iska3 said, "For many years we would always split our wood when it was fresh cut or when it was below zero for a week or more." And I have found this to be true. Even a couple nights of temps. in the teens can make a big difference. Dan.

    Burning Pine

Like bobt said, it's Poplar. Quaking Aspen I believe. Dan.

    Burning Pine

I do the same thing only with Popple. Mostly considered a junk wood, I find that properly seasoned it gives a fast hot fire, much like you describe. I just top off with Beech and Maple before going to bed. I have a wood lot and can cut any thing I want. The Popple is plentiful and easy to...

    advice for splitting beech...

If it's like the Beech I have it'll split REAL easy when it's cold. Don't know how cold it gets in Indiana but a couple nights of single digits is all it takes. Dan.
