Getting started with the ripsaw - blade build up?

The oil is only lubricating the gear drive on the ripsaw and it really shouldn't take all that much. I'm guessing the build up on the blades is just par for the course with a softwood. I suppose you could rig up a water drip (has anyone else tried this w/ a ripsaw)? Set on low on my 036 it...

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

1st Walnut bowl I like this thread and thought I'd bump it back up to the top with a pic of a bowl I turned from the walnut tree I milled last year. I not really that much into turning but it's nice to have the option when you want to + winters are pretty cold and long here!

    Do you ...

Sure do... I've been reading the replies and thought I would take some pics from the street the GF and I walk the dog on each evening. I skipped the oaks and some of the softwoods and focused on the more sought after species. There's a lot of big old hardwoods on these old town streets and yards.

    RipSaw Help

Hey Al, Glad to hear you're back on track-and getting 4 sharpenings from a band! I haven't sharpened any of mine yet as I bought a pack of 12 and still have 5 left + I haven't used the ripsaw all that much yet. When you seeing the sparking and binding at the guides did you have any problems...

    RipSaw Help

Hi Al, I don't think I'll be able to answer your question but I've had the same experience. The last log I cut with the rispsaw was an Ailanthus and I had the same problems. I was thinking there was a lot of tension in the wood that I cut as it has since split badly and just generally moved a...

    Walnut Crotch Story and Pics

Awesome score! I love walnut and there seems to be a fair amount of it around here. The thinner stuff I cut last year is just about air dried now. Can't wait to get to work making some projects with it... Thanks for sharing the pics and story.

    New guy

Welcome to the site, I did a similar thing just about this time last year. At least that's when the trees came down. You can read about it in my post. http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=77583 It's been a good learning experience and I have a pretty big stack of cherry and...

    Eucalyptus

On a trip to PT in 2000, we were on a bus somewhere on the southwest coast and there were these huge trees everywhere. I asked what they were and was told that they were Eucalyptus planted many years ago for pulp. They had spread quite a lot. Didn't make it to the azores but enjoyed Portugal...

    Ripsaw powerheads-028 didn't work out

I've been happy with the performance of the 036 that came with mine and I think I've heard others say that as well. My problem has been with wavy cuts. I cut some stuff last weekend and it was all over the place. I never have been able to find that elusive white line for adjusting the tension...

    New to milling (long)

That's some nice clear cedar. Our local landscape recycling center won't take any logs unless they are cut 3' or smaller. Makes me crazy. There was a beautiful sycamore log over there the other day cut into little cookies...

getting logs up and off the ground

This pic and description were posted by a person on another forum but I thought I would repost it here. Apologies if that is in bad form, but its a really simple solution and while I haven't picked up all of the parts I need, I think this is the way I'll go in the future.... As posted by...

    Second cherry log

Hey thanks, I've been turning the pegs for the tenons a few each night. Here are a couple of pics of the finished corners. I really like doing this stuff...Maybe some day I'll be able to try a small timber frame building.

    milling in a walnut orchard

Really nice slabs. I like the contrast of the dark lines in the wood. I think thats way prettier stuff than my American black walnut that I've been milling. Don't be shy with the pics-we all love 'em. Andy

    Second cherry log

This thread is from quite a ways back, but I thought I'd finish it off. I milled the short, curved log from the base of this cherry tree today. It had sat over the winter and was in the way of my new garden/raised bed that I'm putting in, so it was time. It has a good curve so I cut it thick...

    Got my Ripsaw

You shouldn't need to mess with those too much. Make sure they're set correctly (clearance) and check them every now and then. They don't wear much at all as I understand (someone correct me if I'm wrong here...) You'll probably find you need to change the blade (remove cover) WAY more often...

    Got my Ripsaw

Haven't lost any, but my original ones have worn out. I just wanted to keep any extra parts in stock so I won't be shut down if I lose something or a part breaks. Like many of us here I have limited time for this hobby. Let us know how it works out.

    Got my Ripsaw

There's really not a whole lot to it. Once you've used it a few times you'll know the machine inside out. (Using it takes a little practice-you'll want that guide finger). The tension adjustment is the largest bolt on the saw (I think). It has a turnbuckle and a rod that goes through the top...
