One pull starting a lawn boy mower after setting all winter!

Back in the 60's we used to run 16 to 1 in those Lawnboys - They did smoke some & foul the exhaust ports under the deck, but there were no gnats or mosquitoes around you -

Used (not engine) oil as bar lube

Back in '65, right out of 8th grade, I bought my first chainsaw - I used 10w oil in winter, 30w in the summer. Manual oiler on that old Homelite, but I cut a lot of wood with it -

Used (not engine) oil as bar lube

I know what you mean about that smell - I've got an old [1962] Trojan loader, lots of summer days when I walk near it that old tractor smell is there - smells like roses to me.

Who makes the best Lineman pliers and Diagonal cutters?

We had two sizes of wire with steel in it Bill - Both were 2 bronze strands twisted around steel one. They were called 631 [ same size as 4 stranded] and 477 same as 2 stranded copper. Incredibly strong, pretty sure we used small bolt cutters on them, not the Klein pliers.

Who makes the best Lineman pliers and Diagonal cutters?

Depended on the wire Bill - You could cut up to #2 copper with those Klein pliers, bigger than that like 2/0 or 4/0 you had to go to bolt cutters or ratchet wire cutter if you needed a nice clean cut for an automatic splice. The aluminum was all ACSR, which means aluminum conductor steel...

Who makes the best Lineman pliers and Diagonal cutters?

35 years a lineman for Cl&P - retired 18 years now, still have the same Klein lineman's pliers in my tool pouch - #1 in my opinion.

    Best methods for splitting firewood

A chopping block is needed here, gets the wood up higher to cut down on the aching back i see in your pic. Also,, the soft ground absorbs much of the blow, the block would cure that too.

    Homemade Log Splitter Issues

some pics would help - maybe the belt is just slipping? Lovejoys are the best, a simple mount under the vertical shaft would be easier than trying this, that, and everything between.

    I FINALLY finished my shop!

If you find condensation on the inside of the roof to be an issue, you can get 1" board insulation, rip it to width & get it between your rafters. Just keeps the sometimes warmer inside air from hitting the colder metal - Nice job, way too clean in there though -

Weight of exactly 1 face cord of split & seasoned oak firewood ?

Just a random fact here - The other day I threw a 1/2 cord [was stacked on a pallet] 4x4x4 ft. on my Ford to deliver it - There was 301 split pieces of firewood on there. Only reason it got thrown on by hand was a blown 1" hydraulic line on my old Trojan loader.

Speeco splitter and a dead Briggs - replacement options

A few dozen years ago i read an electric motor was 90% efficient, so a 5 hp would give you 4.5 hp usable. A gas engine on the other hand was only 60%, giving you only 3 usable hp. Not sure if these numbers are still valid, maybe improvements have been made over the years. The electric would...

Speeco splitter and a dead Briggs - replacement options

Most 2 stage splitter pumps are designed to turn at about 3400 rpm, the governed speed of all the 4 stroke engines out there. If you're running one at 540 rpm off a tractor pto, you're really wasting your time and money.

    Stopping splitting and cracking

It's also supposed to help if your stickers are right out to the ends of the boards.

Trash rack/table between splitter and conveyor vs. grizzly bars on end of conveyor

I made this outfeed table years ago for my Didier splitter. Made from steel bars mostly, went into the receiver hitch. I have a 9-16 now, no box wedge though. One could easily made something similar, go into the hitch, right off the aluminum outfeed table on there now. Lots of trash would fall...

Getting ready for the fireplace this winter

Back in the 70's i was of the opinion that a fireplace was the worst waste of heat you could find - Now, i kind of like just sitting there watching it burn - Funny how opinions change.
