Sitka Spruce Planks (Hmmm, this MKIII actually works)

Forgot to mention, I did stick with the Carlton chain. I'm not sure why, but they always seem to cut WAY faster after their first filing. I cut a lot of VG fir for my floor--never seemed to accumulate enough to do the project. JD

Sitka Spruce Planks (Hmmm, this MKIII actually works)

Yes, I did. The planks were ripped down the center and served as trusses. Everything but the shingles were milled with a chain saw. JD

Sitka Spruce Planks (Hmmm, this MKIII actually works)

Wow, this thread started years ago! I've cut tons of spruce since those pictures were taken. That was actually the first time I'd ever used that saw. I had just purchased it from a friend for $50 (just the head) and was more or less happy with how it cut. Ran about 20 tanks of gas through it...

    milling in a walnut orchard

Beautiful wood BlueRider! What a sweet deal. It's good to see that you're able to take advantage of that resource so well. I'm lucky to find 4 hours a month for milling--an opportunity like that and I'd die. Bob, I got a huge grin on my face when I read this. You know this CSM stuff...

Milling Pics and what I got so far

Very nice! I really like your set-up there. You've got some very nice looking lumber and about the neatest stack of firewood I've ever seen. J. D.

    Old growth under water.

For those of you following Ax Men this season, you may be interested to know that S&S Aqua is currently in legal trouble for harvesting old growth timber from the rivers in WA. http://www.kirotv.com/news/18927425/detail.html J. D.

The Perennial CSM Question: How Much Does Powerhead Size Matter?

Thanks everyone for bringing all your years of experience to bear on my question. It sounds to me like my lighter saws are getting me down the road just fine for what I really need. I might just keep my eyes open for a steal on an old 288xp or something along those lines, but as long as I know...

The Perennial CSM Question: How Much Does Powerhead Size Matter?

Thanks Mark, Like I said, I'm milling softwoods up to the full capacity of my mill. Is there a significant difference in speed between the 3120 and the 066? J. D.

The Perennial CSM Question: How Much Does Powerhead Size Matter?

Ok, so I've got a little more than a year of experience working with my Granberg mills (MK 3 and Mini), and I'm always fighting the temptation to buy a bigger powerhead (comes with the territory--I know). My Current Setup: I currently have a 268xp and a 272xp that both run a 32" bar on a 36"...

    Single Slab

I've posted this picture before but it shows that the cheap lumber maker (mine came in a box labeled 'Lumber Marker') does work ok, but you spend a lot of your time doing what I'm seen doing here--tightening the three set screws that slowly drift around your bar as you cut. The advantage of the...

    Husqvarna 266XP initial setup

I have milled a ton of wood with my 268xp and other than running it a wee bit rich I haven't changed anything. It has a 32" bar on it (26" max cut with the mill and oiler on) and I do have to baby it at capacity, but it sails through the kinds of cuts that you'll be making with that length of...

    Yes another Chain Question!

Hey Bob, Are you talking free-hand, or are you using a jig to control your angles? I do all my sharpening with a file (usually free-hand) but I sure couldn't correct or convert a chain without a jig. J. D.

Husky 272xp Rebuilt to 281xp (Possible?)

I think you must be right. My 'confirmed' 272xp has 4 over 5 I think. Whatever it was didn't line up with the displacement. Gordie--thanks. Although it breaks my heart that people have to pay $50 for a used wild thing. :) J. D.

    It's all in my head...

I wonder if part of that is regional. We have some pretty gnarled, punky Hemlock here, but some of the nicest saw logs I see are mature Hemlock. It also mills very nice. J. D.

    It's all in my head...

Exactly. Ha, ha. Perception is reality. The shorter pieces are 8', the longer ones are 11 1/2'. The lighter wood is Sitka spruce and the darker stuff is Hemlock. We don't grow much doug fir right on the coast but there is some great cedar if you can get to it first. Most of it is...

Husky 272xp Rebuilt to 281xp (Possible?)

Thanks for your help. It's always fun to learn this kind of stuff. It will make me wiser the next time. :dizzy: Needless to say, I'll be taking this fake 272 off my milling and replacing it with my real 272. :) J. D.

    It's all in my head...

So I've been thinking that the head powering my MK III was a 281xp, and was completely satisfied with the production I was capable of with an 80+cc saw. Then I came under the impression that it might actually be a 272xp. So, then I was thinking, 'man I wonder what milling with a bigger saw...

Husky 272xp Rebuilt to 281xp (Possible?)

Ha, ha. Ouch! I'm not kidding, I was in the saw shop the other day getting this saw tuned a bit and said, 'this is supposed to be a 281 and my 272 whips it.' Well, sometimes the truth hurts. I bought this from a friend who would give me my money back without an argument but I don't think...
