    EAB reaches Wisconsin

Well, the upshot of this "Polar Vortex" that ran through the upper states a bit ago, is that it may cut back on the EAB population. Story from MPR outlining a few details. http://blogs.mprnews.org/updraft/2014/01/extreme-cold-may-wipe-out-high-percentage-emerald-ash-borer-larvae/ Schumann

Now noted in Janesville (close to Beloit as listed above). Didn't think we'd find this in the dead of winter, but somebody is still looking out for the health of trees there. Yeah...

    Largest healed wound

I'm not an arborist, but I was impressed by a healed tree I saw the other day. I think it may be an elm, and you can see from the picture how large a cut was that healed. I'm curious what you folks see, what species heal this well, what species don't, some good pruning, some bad pruning etc to...

Was Milling this last week and...(chainsaw issue)

The other fuel filter... One that got me in a similar situation was the screen inside the carb that acts as a secondary fuel filter. Take the sides off the carb, and you will find one side with a screen pressed into a hole. it may be filled with fine sawdust that is so fine it looks like a...

Surfacing large slabs with a router

Surfacing bit Here is a bit that some use for surfacing... often called a "spoil board" bit It is made my "Magnate" in the US, and for under $25, seems like a pretty reasonable way to go. Amazon.com: Magnate 2705 Surface Planing ( Bottom Cleaning ) Router Bit - 1-1/2" Cutting Diameter...

    660 vs 395 for milling

Filter I just knock the dust off the filter and slap the prefilter band a few times on something hard to clean it out. It isn't a big deal, but I'd prefer to not have to do it all the time.

Books, Movies, ads, and music that prominently feature chainsaws

We all love our favorite forum's main tool, the chainsaw, and a few of them have even made it into pop culture... where have you seen them? Bonus points for a bow saw or other chainsaw variant. Here is one I walked by at the local Book store the other day... click the image to see a full size...

    660 vs 395 for milling

Air filters I run an 066, and it cuts fine. The only advantage to a Husky (if you have both dealers near by) is that if memory serves, the Husky has the air injection which keeps the filter clean(er). I clean the 066 filter after every pass on big logs... I think the Husky can go quite a...

Homemade "alaska" mill for a poor welder

Welcome and awesome job! Welcome! And thanks for the elegant presentation of an even more impressive home engineered mill! Very cool ideas, brilliantly simple, and just about as cheap as it gets. I wish I had seen this before I bought my mill... Far be it from me to suggest any...

One big log, a 96" bar and my observations

Thoughts... Try mounting the bar the other way... there may be some inherent stresses or flex in the bar that may be lessened if it is flipped over in your mill. Also check to see if it is straight to begin with. You may also look at the mounting clamps... if they are dirty, bent etc, this...

    Stihl Arctic generator information?

Thanks all for the replies, and to Cliffhanger9 for the additional emailed information. Zogger, what a clever idea... wish I had thought of it... I already use 9.6v batts in my field drills at the milling site. If I upgrade to 12 (cheaply via second hand sources) with a truck charger, I may...

    Stihl Arctic generator information?

Hi All, Maybe a question for our northern friends in Canada, but I'm interested in knowing more about the arctic version of the 066. Does anybody know what sort of output the generators have?(Watts / Volts / Amps) or what the handle heaters are rated for? Here is where I'm going with...

    Slab Furniture

I agree with your thoughts. I have a welder, and can stick things together, but my wife and I buy art made by a local artist who makes welded art out of "junk". He can do things with his artistic ability that I cannot, and this is what we value. Sure, it is $10 worth of scrap metal, but we...

Stingers... This week it was getting stung in the ear by a wasp, and then a second one landed on the same ear too... Man oh Man.... I've worked all day with a saw and logs on an ankle I broke and sprained that morning, but I'd sooner do that again than get stung in the ear again...
