    VW engines

In the first vid they were using a VW diesel in which case they were following the leader. VW TDIs rock!

    Do shorter bars cut faster?

You really have to run this experiment in your mind 'cause you can't cut the same wood twice. In my thought experiment I cut the same 12" diameter log twice; once with a 16" bar and once with a 20" bar. So the only thing that changed was the length of the bar. Everything else is exactly the...

my wife and I conversation today

I haven't tried this method myself but it sounds workable. Get a five gal. bucket and fill it half full of water. Pour in a bunch of sunflower seeds. enough to cover the surface of the water. Make a little ramp out of a board maybe put some sunflower seeds on the board so the chipmunks follow...

    Any Finn's in here?

My ex-wife was half Finn half Dane. Talk about unbreakable will! I thought the Finns had more of a "might as well, there's no choice " spirit rather than "can do".

    rule of thumb

Is there any rule of thumb among arborists as to how much (percentage of crown) of a tree can be removed without affecting the health of the tree? The tree in question is a large (20" DBH) mountain ash. I realize this question may be overly broad, if so please let me know what questions I...

    April 9th Wildfire Pics

Yep, when you see all that white ash on the ground that's a good indication that the fire was very hot. Too, it would have to be to burn through that greened up brush. A lot of those trees are not going to make it. If you wandering around out there be careful of trees that have had their roots...

so what am i missing out on?

Some people think chaps are a good idea. It's be a pity to chop a hole in your leg and miss a summer of biking? Ever get up to the southern unit of the kettle moraine?

Possible dumb question on "Felling Marks"

Huh... I must have learned it backwards. All this time I've been using the saw to make the tree fall where I want.:dizzy:

:agree2: http://www.nwcg.gov/pms/pubs/pms841/pms841_pages23-26.pdf See, Common Denominators of Fire Behavior on Tragedy Fires Hats off and all due respect to you structural firefighters out there but fire burning through light fuels (grass and brush) can change behavior in the blink of an...

Forestry Firefighters just a quick question

+1 http://www.wildfirelessons.net/documents/1976to1999_Entrapments_Part_2.pdf See figure 3. It's par for course on AS for someone to post a question re:PPE and for the boneheads to come out of the woodwork to denigrate the effectiveness of whatever piece of PPE is being discussed. No piece of...

pine burned in brush fire, prune back?

Did the fire zip right through or did it linger around the pine for a while? Pics would help. I do a lot of prescribed fire in prairie and woodland here in S. WI so I take great glee in killing pines with fire. That said it's surprising what some trees will withstand. It really depends on the...

1855 GLO Survey Notes and Big Pines in NW Wis.

More likely he's comparing what was seen in the original survey vs what we have now. The "big cut" the OP refers to was the wholesale rape of the forests of the upper midwest. Any marketable tree found in an accessible location was cut in the late 1800s early 1900s. The slash was left to rot or...

Why i set the chain brake when walking

I use the brake any time I take more than a few steps. I figure that using the brake regularly will allow me to know if and when it breaks (no pun intended). I want to know that the brake will function in the event of a kickback.

    West Coast G.O.L. classes?

:agree2: That said, GOL is an excellent course for safety and methodical cutting techniques. If your friend is new to using chainsaws GOL is good way to start. It'll at least teach him to think about what he's doing. School of hard knocks is always a good teacher but lets face it, with...

    Narrow Kerf, for what?

Doesn't it stand to reason that decreasing drag would benefit a larger saw as well as the smaller one? A buddy of mine runs narrow kerf on his 346XP and it's pretty fast. It seems to me that running narrow kerf on a saw with larger displacement would make it even faster unless there is some...
