    Local firewood prices

My goodness where'd this ol' thread come from? South central PA is currently $160-200 for a full cord of split seasoned mixed hardwood - mostly oak; delivered but not stacked.

    Manly Wood Hauler

Hard to say. Smaller home, more seasonal temperatures year round, car-free lifestyle, reliable sources of wood reasonably close to home... He may not need as much for heat; plus a load or two a week throughout the year adds up.

    Who is nuts?

I'm with ya. I live in a somewhat upscale neighborhood (that's a story in itself); but I've got firewood stacked behind the house, behind the shed, and a big pile of rounds in the back yard right now. I ride a bike for short trips to the store instead of taking the car. The neighbors just...

    Warm weather blues

At least I got to move over to the stack of walnut that I had planned for March burning. The locust and red oak is just about gone. You're right about the mud, though. I dropped a big black cherry last week, and now I can't get in to pick up the rounds.

if you could only have one saw

Walkerized 026 with a solid 16" bar. 3/8" chisel. I've also got an 18" setup for it if I have to, and on rare occasions I've run a 24" with half-skip, although the balance is pretty funky. 95% of the time a 16" is all I need. Makes no sense carrying anything heavier.

What are the two most important things you leaned here

    1. If you powerport an 025, you don't need no heavy ol' 361, and; 2. As good as chaps are, you should still wear something underneath them.

    Husky or Stihl

Rats. After all these years I still only get one vote.

Must of jinxed it. Sorry bru.

The 025/250 is the most underrated saw Stihl ever made. Those things are bullet proof.

    roadside wood gathering

I haven't scrounged in a while, but I've noticed this spring from riding my bicycle around the area that there is a lot of wood down from the Right of Way guys going through, especially locust. I think I'm going to start knocking on doors.

    Chainsaw Envy

I used to get e-mails all of the time saying that I could increase the size of my saw just by clicking on the link. I finally did and they sent me a saw enlargement kit after I made 3 easy payments. Its kind of like an Elastostart. I'm not sure my saw is any bigger yet, but if I keep...

just when i thought i was done.

I prefer to cut and split in the cold also, but I think there may be some early morning work for me this summer. Given the rising fuel oil prices, I don't want any doubt that I'll have as much wood as I need...probaby going to stock up for the next two seasons, and then some.

just when i thought i was done.

Me too. I'm out back looking to bring up next winter's supply when "she who must be obeyed" talks to me about starting a fire tonight. It's supposed to dip down in the thirties with frost, so I guess we can do that.

    When good plans go...

Yup. I try to go with a full 90 degree notch as well. That way the holding wood is controlling the direction of the fall with minimal stress until the notch finally closes. By then the direction is a given, and there is sufficient momentum in the falling tree to avoid getting hung up either...

    Question

38 Mag., a little heavy by today's standards, but plenty of torque. They also are pretty much bomb proof.

    Best old & inexpensive truck?

Also keep in mind that these older trucks are usually exempt from emissions standards. I have a friend who is my inspection mechanic...as long as I'm not putting "road miles" on my firewood truck, he usually just does a "lick-em stick-em" check for me each year.

Are you burning these or eating them?

    Bone's New Hauler

That's no firewood truck. First, there are no dents in the bed from where you tried to fling a small round in from 20 yards and slightly mis-calculated the trajectory. Next, I don't see any wire needed to keep the bent tailgate from falling open when you've got a full load and are pulling...

Dunno, is this hickory really worth it?
