I'm a big fan of mine. Seems to be the saw I keep grabbing first these days...

    who gave this guy a 661 ?

Are you sure that's an MTronic? Don't these look like carb screw holes?

Zen and Saws: A Day of Trail Clearing and Maintenance

I do especially love what the PNW has to offer! But certainly appreciate the diversity throughout this whole country. There are definitely things I miss about Michigan from my stint of living there. Love Arizona, southern Utah, and Colorado too!

Zen and Saws: A Day of Trail Clearing and Maintenance

This place is fun. Doesn't have to follow the rules for trails that DNR/USFS land does... Just beautiful, gnarly, pirate style building at its finest.

Zen and Saws: A Day of Trail Clearing and Maintenance

Had some recent logging in this zone, and now it's time to start rebuilding the trails. We got word there was a log jam and some nasty blowdowns and hangups in this particular stretch of trail; seemed like a good use of a Saturday morning... Finding the trail in the grown over brush was...

So I ran out the door this morning to go clear a mess of trees on a nearby trail and left whatever chain and bar was still on the saw from last weekend (albeit with a quick couple file strokes). Dammit if it didn't just cut wood right there in front of me! Might've even shaved a few seconds off...

Oh, I have nothing against questions. Just playing around. ;) Though I do think, sometimes, people get too caught up in the minutiae. All the chains and configurations will cut wood, assuming they're reasonably sharp. If someone is happy with stock chain, great; if they feel they want more...

    Sharpening a square chisel

And of course it's a hell of a lot easier for me doing that square in the garage clamped in a vice, rather than out in the field...

    Sharpening a square chisel

I'm pretty damn happy with the results thus far. I need to do up some 91DL loops though; been using that bar more recently.

    Sharpening a square chisel

Well, you can't very well cut a square tree with a round filed chain, now can you?

    Sharpening a square chisel

6 sided or also sometimes called double bevel chisel. Yes, you sharpen both the top plate and side plate with each stroke.

Question about cutting trees for firewood.

His post read a bit ambiguously, so I figured I should clarify. Either way, it's... But just how much...

Question about cutting trees for firewood.

Out of curiosity, when you say, "hardly ever use a wedge," do you mean you rarely pound plastic wedges to redistribute weight or that you avoid cutting a wedge for a face cut and instead opt to make two flat felling cuts (one horizontal for a face and one horizontal 1 inch higher for a backcut)?

Assuming they're both naked under their chaps, I'll do it. But they still gotta carry their own gear.

Zen and Saws: A Day of Trail Clearing and Maintenance

We were definitely lucky to get that support! Lot of riders around here, and luckily the word is out that new trails get done faster with more volunteer hours. Get this... We had 80 people come out for our Tiger Mountain pre-open trail maintenance weekend! Nice new trail saw BTW.
