    Tax Credit

They keep it complicated to be able to suck the money out of you. That is why I pay an accountant and stick to what I know(Making cars go fast and chain saws cut fast);).

    Tax Credit

I don't know the specifics on the tax credit that you are referring to, however, when I write off my tools as a work expense they get adjusted out of your taxable income. Charity donations work this way as well. I would imagine any other credits would work that way as well.

    Burning wood is like stealing

I burn about 25 gal of No2 heating oil a year. That comes from the days that I sleep in a little and the furnace actually kicks on:blob2:.

What are your COLD weather gloves?

I use Army issue pilots gloves that are very well insulated. As long as I am moving they keep my fingers plenty warm. I will try to get pictures tomorrow.

    Log Splitter Pump

The higher the gpm the faster your cycle times will be on the same size cylinder. The bigger pump requires a bigger motor though, I have a haldex 11gpm behind a 3HP Honda and it runs just fine. The pump is supposed to have a 5HP pushing it though. I think that 3HP Honda has a little more torque...

Utility body / service body for wood cutting

Problem was they built the truck then put the motor in and they would twist frames if you did any real work with them. ;)

Chimney Cap Cleaning From The Ground

USAA didn't seem to care about my chimney at all. When I bought insurance for my place they asked about a fireplace, I answered yes, they asked about the swimming pool, I said yes, they said well that is going to cost you a little more.

How long should a cord of wood last?

Depending on the winter and type of wood I can go through 7-13 chords and about 25 gallons of no.2 heating oil.

    WOO-HOO Finally "finished" & burning!

It is going to give you a relatively close reading, But typically the air temp itself will actually be 2-5 degrees warmer than the metal surfaces. Different metals absorb the heat differently as well. So aluminum will absorb more than steel but will get rid of it faster as well.

Does a fireplace insert need a pipe?

Only for the new EPA stoves is this a requirement.

    WOO-HOO Finally "finished" & burning!

FYI the IR thermometer that you are using there only ready surface temps. More than likely you are reading the temp of the gold grate there. To measure air temp you would need a probe like the turkey thermometer and let it sit in the vent for about 3-5 mins to get an actual air temp reading.

Does a fireplace insert need a pipe?

I would say no. I am running a treemont from the mid '70s without one. My clay liner isn't cracked(check that twice a year). This stove heats my house all year long with no issues.

    Time for a new saw.

Contrary to what half the people said in this thread, the MS290 with a 20" bar on it will serve you just well. And any saw(of decent quality) that you keep the right oil mix in the fuel and enough oil on the chain will last you a lifetime(at least until a tree falls on it, and even then I have...

What do you remove snow with.

At my house I just drive over top of it with my 2007 expedition EL 4X4 to get to this: (generic image) It is sitting at the Food lion parking lot that I plow.

    Which small Stihl to buy?

I completely disagree. I can go 2 cut with my 180 to one with my 210. Bang for the buck you are getting more with the 180. My BIL will back me up on this as well. One other advantage for the 180 is that it is lighter.

    Fire starter debate

During the days when I am here all I burn is 2X. There is a truss company up the road from me that will drop is off by the truckload for free. I keep the box full and the house warm with it. Here is a picture of this years 2X piles.

    Leveraxe

Here is the thing though. Even if the exchange rate was 1 to 1 that would make this axe $190.00 plus shipping. Compared to the $35 splitting maul that would be sitting on the shelf next to it that is a lot of money for the same about of material (axe head, handle). While I appreciate good...

do any of you miss burning already?

Miss it, hell I missed all of last winter. I am going nuts:dizzy:. I haven't been able to touch any of my saws much less burn any of the wood that I put away last summer. The wife got to have all the fun while I was in school with the military.:buttkick:

    Woodstove vs. Pellet Stove

I am thinking about installing a pellet stove in my bedroom end of the house just so that I don't have to get up at 3 or 4 in the am to reload the stove(1970's treemont insert). If I don't get up at that time to reload it is right chilly at the bedroom end of the house which is the farthest from...
