    Introducing.......

Congrats, I have two young daughters and wouldn't trade them for anything. They are worth every penny that it will cost me to send them to college.

    Who's still burning?

Have not had a fire since May 1st. Last night was pretty cold so I put my kids in footed pjs and put an extra blanket on everyone. Warms up enough by mid day not to bother firing up the stove for me.

    Is This Poison Ivy ???

Looks like Poison ivy to me. I have used garlon ultra to kill it. That seems pretty effective. When I got it in March I went to a walk in clinic and they gave me a steroid instead of a shot that seems to dry it out pretty quick, if you do get it.

Took the liner out of my truck bed

I have been using the rhino spray in liner on all my work trucks and it seems to hold up pretty well.

    Firewood Price Predictions

I doubt prices would go up around me. A cord was selling around $125 last winter and I expect it to be the same this year. I don't buy or sell but I do keep an eye on the prices.

    Avalancher vs. Woodbooga

This is pretty funny stuff. I don't usually laugh out loud but with you two......

    Tulip Poplar

Free wood is always good wood. Keeping it off the ground should help it from going bad. I have not burned a lot of it but what I did burn didn't get punky. I kept that portion covered and on pallets for a good year or so.

    Another species ID....

Ash. I think it is one of the easiest woods to split, right up there with silver maple

    wood consumption

114 year old drafty 2 story house, 2500 sq feet. I burned just under 5 cords with natural gas as a backup. I plan to install a 2nd wood stove to reduce my usage of nat gas to near 0. I think it would be good to have "extra" wood stockpiled. I went through more wood than I expected this...

    Geothermal

For one of my building at work we installed a pond loop system where we used a 2 acre nearby pond for the heat source. We bought two Water Furnace Envision heat pumps. So far so good as they were installed in November 08. Have not seen quite the saving I expected but I hope it will be better...

What do you enjoy more, burning wood or gathering it?

I would have to say burning it. I really enjoy sitting around the fire on a cold December day with snow falling, reading a book or listening to music. My kids are running around in their underpants because it is so warm and the heat is free. I can't think of anything better.

Looking to install a wood stove

I have a soapstone stove as well, the heritage by Heartstone. I agree that it takes awhile to get it heated up but once it does it works great. And like someone else said don't always believe what the manufacturer says about heating square footage. I plan to buy a Jotul this fall to...

    KIlled one in the woodshed

We usually see a few garter snakes around our woodpiles, they can't eat anything big but it is still nice to see them around. Back in the day when I was in HS I worked with a science teacher that did research on timber and massasauga rattlesnakes. We would actually go out looking for them...

    Wood ID!

Some of that is elm, not sure about the other

Dry Cherry has a lot of slivers.

I burned almost a cord of it this past March and didn't notice really any more slivers than other species. I have the hardest time with elm, I try to always wear gloves for that.

Gas Co. is at it again, Grrrrrrrr

I think I read in the newspaper the other week that they were increasing our natural gas fees to "cover" how they are going to start reading our gas meters. Instead of having someone read our meters every other month soon the meters will be tied in to a satellite that can read it every month...

    Beech wood

They are a different species of tree. Blue beech is also known as American Hornbeam, muscle wood, and ironwood(At least here in Ohio). The tree has smooth gray bark but as the ripples in it like a muscle under skin. They don't get very tall or have a big DBH. Mostly an understory tree. I...
