Speeco splitter and a dead Briggs - replacement options

It's a 190 CC flathead with 6.75 ft-lbs of torque. On lots of lawn mowers. I think they call it a 5 hp engine. I have this splitter too and the old briggs is still in great shape but what I did is buy a pressure washer with a subaru 5 hp vertical shaft engine. Eventually that washer pump will...

King or Princess? (I mean Blaze king stoves)

28' of vertical chimney will do a lot to overcome lack of draft from a 6" compared to an 8". It looks like a little single wall reducer on the stove top and right into the double wall. Doing it that way really takes your eyes away from the size change.

Water Heater Size? Gas or electric?

I would recommend an off the shelf 40 gallon electric tank heater. The wires are already there, the plumbing is in the right spot. No moving parts, a reservoir of hot water if the power goes out short term, etc. These things are cheap to buy and replace. No explosions, noise, or CO poison.

    Wood stove issues

4-5 years of full time use can easily exceed the expected 10,000 hour life cycle of a catalyst. I swap mine after it fails approximately every 3 years. If you only use the stove occasionally, it can last many years. The key is 10,000 hours. 18 feet of single wall is too much for any stove. My...

    First Fire of the season

Nah, we in western washington at 750' ASL had 42 this morning. The afternoons still get hot though so we're not needing heat in the house quite yet.

Judging cord amount by log truck load

I think you misunderstood what I said. It wasn't really written well, my fault. When I said people out of the PNW, I meant people that are not in the PNW don't get these large log trucks with thick stems and long lengths. We agree!

Any small engine techs? My splitter engine is having issues.

I was trying to clarify your statement and agreeing. The other issue is that a full tank is less likely to accumulate water so keep her full!

when you light the fire do you use a propane torch

Yes. All fires are started with the green LP bottles and a trigger ignited torch head on top. Works great.

Any small engine techs? My splitter engine is having issues.

Nomatter how full the fuel tank is, you are always sucking the fuel off of the bottom where this mud will fall.

Advice on using an EPA stove?

Interesting. And no OAK for the wood furnace? I'm actually glad to see that you have also melted the airwash plate at the top of the loading door opening. Mine has sagged in a very similar way.

Advice on using an EPA stove?

Not when you're cold! When making big heat your stove will be eating lots of fuel and be running at higher intake settings. Once your home is up to temperature you can reduce the primary air to stretch out the burn time.

Advice on using an EPA stove?

I tried to photograph the "tunnel of love" that really seems to help this thing rip. You'll also notice that I stack wood in there like hot dogs to the roof. Seriously, fill it up and let it eat. My lowest cruise setting, 19 foot vertical chimney, is with the tip of the spring vertically under...

Advice on using an EPA stove?

Mustang, you are not filling it up. That's just a half load. You need to stuff that thing with wood and quit closing the draft so far. Let it eat! Leave it like the first picture. Last night I had a nice NC30 fire and shot the stove next to the door with an IR gun, way over 600.

First Year Heating With Wood Fiasco

You can add a wood boiler but keep your propane domestic hot water, wood stove, even your propane furnace. I have a BK ultra and it's great for me but those things are 3500-4000 bucks.

Advice on using an EPA stove?

If I had to tell you my one best trick to getting heat from this thing it has been to fill it up with 3-5" splits and hold 400 flue surface temperatures and ignore everything else. No door open burning, that just blows your heat up the stack. Load north to south and it really helps to have a...

Advice on using an EPA stove?

I run an NC30 really hard to heat a shop building. Added a convection deck and bigger blower. I think you're babying it. I like to run this thing at Stove top temps of 700-750 with full loads of dry PNW softwoods that only last about three hours. I measure flue surface temperatures on my single...

creosote vs flue temp vs seasoning wood

I'm willing to bet that the 450 you remember is internal flue gas temperatures which correspond to about 225 surface temperatures on single wall pipe. That would be a logical minimum to prevent most creosote.
