    just another pile of logs

I am humbled Ok, I cleaned the sawdust off my glasses. I admit that I grossly overestimated what I have. I allow you to laugh at me while I try to explain my error. This load looked about the same as my last load load. But previously I have been using 1 and 2 inch black iron pipe as...

    just another pile of logs

progress photo for you then After 5 logs, not all the billets are in the photo. I think there were 90 and I count a few more than 60 here. 14" slices and a lot of sawdust. Snow is looking like it will put a damper on my fun this weekend.

    just another pile of logs

I guess the perspective is a bit off. The pile from left to right on the view from my deck measures 30' at its longest. Many of the logs are 20' long and 20" diameter. The truck was full to the top, albeit loaded a bit sloppy and there were a couple of pieces of kabuki that wasted space...

    just another pile of logs

For those of you who like pictures of a log pile. Called my supplier last Thursday. I expected to hear him sing the blues about having no work and him telling me a few months for a load. Instead I heard machines going and he said he would call me back. Calls me back 2 hours later and says...

Let's Look At Wood Heat Content

+1 Exactly, keep a mix and burn what is appropriate. A piece of red maple certainly helps the locust get going.

Is pine a quick drying wood?

Did you test an exposed end or did you re-cut or split a piece in half and test in the middle?

    What is this wood?

Cherry indeed. The bark (log) does look similar to pine/spruce though.

Got some use from my PPE today

This afternoon, as I put my saw into a log, it grabbed a piece of bark and flung it at my face. Instantly it bounced off my face shield and I heard a plastic ring through my helmet. I just kept on cutting and said to myself that I was glad I didn't have to find out if that would have hurt...

    Question on Buying logs

I get logs from a tree service. Yes diseased trees and metal are all part of the package. The majority of the load is usually oak or locust. The least desireable wood that he ever gives me is red maple. I have never been given sycamore, pine or white birch. Up until last year the wood...

care to share your meat smokin tips & recipies?

Although you do not have a weber smoker, a lot of good information for smoking in general can be found at http:\\www.virtualweberbullet.com I generally use oak and cherry. I also have a stash of apple, beech, mulberry and black birch. I stay away from locust, I think is smells pretty...

    pile(s) of logs for sale

Yes check it carefully, especially the logs that are in contact with the ground. Looking at how they are piled up might make that a bit difficult. The locust is probably as solid as the day it was cut. The cherry is probably past its prime, especially if is in contact with the wet ground.

    Moisture Percentage Science Project

I've been been doing an experiment tracking the weight of a couple pieces of wood over the past year and here are the results. I do not have a moisture meter, I figured out the relative moisture content by weight alone. I used grams because it is easy to convert from grams to liters...

Got a compliment from my neighbor today

When bringing the kids to school today one of my neighbors told me how much she likes the burning wood smell coming from my chimney. The funny thing was that I was burning black locust, which I find rather unpleasant. I had just walked out the door and caught the stench of it. I was thinking...

    What is this tree?

And what is no good for furniture does an excellent job in the smoker.

    apple wood pros and cons

It has been a long while since I have had a quantity of apple. As I recall a half burned piece will spark and pop like fireworks if disturbed in the fire. So be careful when adding wood. Other than that it burns great and gives off plenty of heat.

    Red Oak "Odor"

The stink from red oak reminds me of dog crap. White oak on the other hand, that is sweet perfume. And like others have all ready said, it does dissipate.

    Pin Oak

I got that red oak - dog poop smell in my backyard now too. It really stenches when you cut them. I much prefer the smell of white oak. Split a bunch over the weekend. The clear pieces were fun to split and broke right apart. 20"+ diameter, 3 or 4 wacks with a maul, you get that sweet thud...
