Outside air for combustion, PE Summit insert, fireplace in middle of house??

    1) IF you are burning seasoned wood 2) IF you have a decent chimney 3) IF you give it a chance to get well started 4) IF there is not packing materials blocking the flue 4) IF there isn't something grossly wrong like an improper install Then the stove cannot be as bad as you say...

    Standing Dead

I've been burning dead standing red oak almost exclusively this winter. It did a great job. Two observations: very little ash, I cleaned the stove out less than once a week and didn't even get a full bucket most of the time BUT I had a lot of clinker buildup that often welded itself to the...

Talk to me about skid loader grapples

I agree that looks like the ideal style grapple for working with logs. Of course a good operator helps :) Ken

Talk to me about skid loader grapples

<sigh> I have that problem too with my commercial grapple :( I think the hoses are too long for one thing. Ken

Talk to me about skid loader grapples

I have a root grapple like this: I didn't understand all the differences when I bought it. It is far from optimum for my needs. They may work very well for picking up a single big log like gink shows where you can tip it down over the top of the log and close the grapple on the...

    Splitter scraps for kindling...

Putting them on the blacktop on a hot summer day is a great idea!

Should I Buy This or Not?

It may be a great buy at $1000, but what will it cost you to put it in service? If you don't have a truck to put it on? If you don't have a pump and setup to operate it? Whether or not it's worth a thousand dollars to you depends on what it's going to take you to get it operational. The...

    Wood Splitter Picture Thread

I did something very similar but added a $79 HF 12v winch and a pair of logging tongs. It gets the big ones up on the splitter :) Ken

Where to buy a long tree felling lever

The local voc ed school started an adult class a couple of days before I checked :msp_sad: But yes, that's the route I plan to go. Hopefully they will have another class in a couple of months. Ken

Where to buy a long tree felling lever

I want to learn to weld, I see too many neat projects by guys who know how to weld. My son is storing his welding outfit here, so I have access once I figure out what I'm doing. Ken

Video of new bobcat skidding logs, etc

That looks like quite a serious grapple you have there :) I suspect that different people are talking about totally different types of grapples here. Ken

Where to buy a long tree felling lever

Weld a plate onto a crow bar or spud bar? I can see where it would be worthwhile for dropping trees vs. a wedge, but that little one in the video? I'm sure most of us would have had it down a lot faster without the $400 lever  But let me ask another question: It seemed to me...

Oak vs Hickory... the best firewood?

I have to agree about the sawdust-bugs with hickory. I often wonder if some of the poor results are from lack of full seasoning. White oak (we don't have any) is more rot resistant than red oak (which is pretty good) but I wonder if that same top notch rot resistance also requires longer...

    Stihl MS-170 or Husky 435?

The 170 is much lighter than the 435. But....they don't seem to last with moderate use. I don't understand how you are finding them at the same price! The 170 should be well under $200. I paid well over that for my 435. Ken

Want new woodstove for HEAT not looks

DYI, Harman sold out a couple of years ago. One of problems with Harman Stoves is getting warranty service. If there is a problem and the local dealer that sold it doesn't want to be bothered, the warranty is totally worthless. Ken

Want new woodstove for HEAT not looks

Probably true for the better furnaces, but our upstairs wood stove cost significantly more than the wood furnace in the basement is currently selling for. Basic installation is going to cost the same for a chimney. Yes, ductwork can be expensive, or it could be simple and inexpensive...

Want new woodstove for HEAT not looks

The US Stove Hotblast is sold by Tractor Supply. There may be better ones out there, but it's a decent wood furnace. Ken

Want new woodstove for HEAT not looks

If you are putting it in the basement and want the heat upstairs, I definitely recommend a wood furnace. Depending on the layout of your house and how you want the heat distributed, you may not need much new ductwork. For our house, only a single duct/register into the dining room did a good...

    wood burning question

Typically how big in diameter do the mills want before they will buy walnut? I'm assuming they have to be fairly big logs? Ken

Want new woodstove for HEAT not looks

When we bought this house, it had a Hotblast 1400 (TSC) in the basement. It did a good job of heating the house. It is a wood furnace with a duct connection that you can route upstairs. I highly recommend running the duct to upstairs, it's much, much better than heating the basement and...
