Took the plunge - MK III 30" mill

Carlton works just fine. Its what Bailey's sells under the WP brand.

Took the plunge - MK III 30" mill

You can order longer rails for the Alaskan to make it wider when you feel the need. I have a 36" and have 36" and 42" bars for my 394XPs, and have cut 32"+ width, but slabs that width get heavy fast. If your plan is just to cut lumber/beams/cants and your logs are less than 24", you'll be...

Black walnut possibly unique spots? pics

I've never seen black walnut with that odd pattern, or that much sap wood.

    Blade lube for bandsaw

I use Dawn dishwashing liquid and water and have never had any sap buildup. I can't say that it stains the wood either.

    Rip chain for 084

You'll need to change your rim (drive) sprocket to 3/8 as well. Stihl RM (semi-chisel) works very well straight from the box for milling if you don't want to buy or file/grind a ripping chain. .404 chain is $$.

    91 cc's Oh Yeah!!!!

I'm with the monkey man on this, but then again, I run my big saws for millin'......really likin' my 394XPs even if they weigh 1# more than the 066 or 660.

    91 cc's Oh Yeah!!!!

Nardoo finally mentioned the poly flywheel. The earlier versions used the aluminum flywheel, had the smaller crank ala 064, but had the best cylinder (non-decomp). IIRC, the "wrap" version sold in the states had the larger clutch cover and higher volume oiler.

Free firewood on craigslist and came home with one more saw in a box

Do a muffler mod and retune on that 026 and you'll see a noticeable gain.....that and full chisel, non-safety chain.

80cc's+, reliable, used - Your thoughts

84dl at my preferred Stihl dealer is $24. 135dl 36RM for my 42" bar was $38. Stihl chain doesn't stretch as much, and seems to stay sharp longer. Its also harder on files when resharpening. I touch up by hand until a chain needs to be put on the grinder for serious work. The chain needs...

    40cc Shoot Out

Have you compared the ported saw with .325 vs 3/8 VXL? 6T .365(?) vs 7T .325 is only worth .085" per turn of the drive sprocket. Did you switch for that reason, or because the .325 cutters hold up better?

    Will a 395xp cylinder fit a 394xp?

If you decide to do this, check the squish first, and then send that number along.

what 's wrong ? to good to be true.

MSRP (per Echo's website) for the 500p is $449-$469, so Wise is right at full retail. I don't think the case + a 20" B&C is worth an extra $150.

Stihl RM right out of the box works great.

80cc's+, reliable, used - Your thoughts

Try a loop or 2 of Stihl 33RM (3/8 .050 semi-chisel) for milling. I cut a lot of dry, dead wood, and prefer semi to full chisel because it stays sharper longer. It works much better for milling than does full chisel. I think it cuts more aggressively and nearly as smoothly as ripping chain on...

I do some milling. :) I started out with a 272xp and gave up on it pretty quickly. I bought a rebuilt 066 and then added a WP BB kit and have milled with it (660 as a backup) mostly since 2008. Recently I decided that the Stihl was lacking in 30"+ wood (milling) so decided to use my...

    Will a 395xp cylinder fit a 394xp?

Your piston looks almost new, and the pitting below the exhaust port is a non-issue. 150psi isn't a bad number. IIRC, its common for the stock 372XPs to have as low as 135psi. Delete the base gasket if you can. Make sure that you have at least .020" squish and call it good.

Chainsaw Mill Setup? (I know, I know - not the first to ask, won't be the last)

Yellowbeard, Don't get all wrapped up in the initial price of the mill. The Granberg Alaskan can be changed from size to size by swapping rails. Mine was initially 24", but I later bought 36" rails for it, and have left those rails in place. I've had fleeting thoughts of longer rails, but...
