Created a homeowner monster saw, Thanks guys

Way to go Timbermaster! Poulans really arent that bad their just not as tolerant of abuse. But you take good care of one and it should be fine. Yep you'll be seeing more power out of it as it loosens up.

    Spark Arrestors?

Aluminum will melt use fine mesh stainless steel.

    Best 45-50cc saw w/ 18-20inch bar capability

Without a doubt go for the Solo 651 and don't look back! I'm very happy with my Solo's. The 651 in my opinion is very well made and at the same time lightweight. If your used to the simple controls of an older saw like me you'll feel right at home with it. They have a real metal toggle kill...

Reeds VS Port, old VS new

Thats something I've often wondered my self. Of all the new and old saws I've run I prefer a reed valve engine. Just seems like more usable power to me, easier for less experianced users to handle also.

    Partner p517 (merged)

Sounds like a good deal to me! They are a very tough old saw very smooth powerband as well. Parts should be no problem to find.

    690 Solo

It may be the 651SP that is discontinued. I know my distributor has dropped it and now picked up the 651 in its place. They are nice saws but Solo's marketing is terrible.

    Bought 026 on ebay

I'd have to say you did good too. As long as the seller has some knowledge of what he's selling you should be ok. I really get a laugh out of the ones that give it a little shot of carb cleaner, gas (straight or mix)?!, either, or whatever is at hand. And then tell you it runs great! My rule for...

    P40 Flywheel broken fin ???

Just snap the opposite fin off and don't worry about it. I've got several running saws with the same arrangement absolutely no problems. I've just carefully broken the fins off with a small hammer and punch. You need to be extra carefull and just lightly hit it enough to break it off not smack...

    SOLO KleinMotoren Comes Thru!

I like the muffler fasteners myself, they are torx with teeth on the bottom seem to bite into the muffler and hold well. I've noticed Solos seem to be less restricted than other saws. They have a much deeper tone. I sold my neighbor a 651SP and I can always hear him cutting firewood a 1/2...

    Hard Chrome vs. Nikasil Bores?

I'm not sure how they do it but the old Ford 300 straight 6 will easily get to around 400,000. I've seen several like that, didnt really smoke much either. Maybe they hid a Honda in there lol :)

    sachs dolmar 112

Welcome bighoss! I agree you won't see much more power out of an older saw. What shape is it in? Might just need freshend up a little or at most a light rebuild, rings etc. Myself I prefer a 20" bar, long enough to tackle most anything here in PA. Some good .325" chain with chisel cutters...

    Another "Wild thing" story

Thats what I see most guys do that work for electric, cable companies etc. Use the trucks and equipment for their personal work:rolleyes:

    Collectors

Nice looking saws! I'd say my favorite is my trusty old Pioneer P50. Its heavy but really cuts like heck.

    Cleaning out a chainsaw

Thats the general idea it probably doesnt do much but just incase. You really can't get all the bar oil out unless you disassemble and meticulously clean the workings of the oiler and tank/lines etc. Some will most likely drip out on the way. Yes I do drain all fluids from saws I ship but never...

    Cleaning out a chainsaw

Never had a problem with bagging them up good and tying it. I then pack it good so it wont move around and stay upright in the box with plenty of space on all sides. I also put some whole newspapers under the saw in the bag to soak up any left over oil. I once received a saw I bought on...

    Run away Mac

One thing I always do before I tune an old saw is replace the crank seals and check the gaskets. Its easy to do and cheap saves alot of time and frustration instead of chasing air leaks.

    McCulloch

Mange, Don't let Tony spoil your experiance with these old saws. The patience and knowledge you gather by working on them and making them run is well worth your time spent. Its not rocket science to make any 2 cycle engine run I don't care what it is. You need to know the basics spark, fuel...
