need a thin base gaket for a ms 460

Sounds like that would be hard to get from a 460 unless you take it pretty far for a work saw. Now that the 460 is done.......how'd it match up with your 660? How much porting work did you do on the transfers, intake & exhaust port areas? What was your starting and final compression...

    Box Elder, Locust, and Osage

I've burned a bit of honey locust, great stuff, black is supposed to be a shade better yet. I'd jump on that. Osage, I've never gotten much at one time, but wish I could. VERY long burning and burns hot. Does spark more than other woods I've used & I'd suggest letting it cure for at least...

    my firewood score!!!

WOW! ! The force is strong in you my friend! ! LOL!  Not only a huge pile of wood for next to nothing, but it's HICKORY besides, about the best firewood there is..... Like someone else said, wear a grove in the road! ! Quickly, before anyone else realizes what you're doing...

    Questionable measuring of delivered cords.

NO NO NO NO!!! A cord of wood is 128 cubic ft. no more & no less. That is the ONLY legal amount, cord=128 cubic ft. A brush cord, or pulp cord is still 128 cubic ft. And a face/rick cord isn't anything but what the seller wants it to be, but that was NOT what he paid for, he bought 2 cords=256...

    firewood prices(INDIANA)

What will you do when he pulls in with a 43 cubic foot load cut to 4' long? ? A honest rick should be 1/3 cord no matter how his customers want it cut. He's just try'n to gain more customers by better service.

    What the Stihl dealer said

"...how can that be....." he asks.....easy. Just a slight difference in chain sharpness...heck several possible reasons. Including operator bias, keep them close so it looks legit, then proclaim the wonders of the 441.........:censored: Nuff on that, Regarding what to buy.... I...

    opinions for next saw?

460 Same weight as the 441, more powerful, faster. That said, while I"m a fan of Stihl brand saws myself....Dolmar 7900 would be a even better choice IMO. I've run a 7900 and it's lighter and has a tad more power than the 460.

How many cubic feet of loose wood to equal a cord?

Spot on man! +1 Unless you've hauled and stacked loads with a given truck/trailer it's just a guess.

    in the market for chainsaw

If you can find a Dolmar dealer in your area by all means stretch your budget a bit and get a 5100s Dolmar. This is a really great choice for anyone who may need to get by with one saw for sometime to come. 3.9hp and runs a 18" bar very well + only weighs around 14lbs. The 5100 I...

Big stuff, is it worth it? Poll, kinda.

I won't say I love the real big stuff, but cut it when I have to. Some rare trees do however give the "thrill" of rise'n to the challenge..... Some friends and I took down one of those challenge trees a couple weeks ago. 65" dbh white ash tree that the EAB had killed. Tree was huge...

    Poplar as firewood?

Here in Mi that (Popple) is the generic for a couple of the the lower BTU "hardwoods" such as Aspen & Poplar. Some would add Basswood & Cottonwood to that count as well. All are sort of gofer woods, put in a load and gofer more. Not really as bad as all that really, but you get the idea...

    winter is here!

81* yesterday and 80* today, and this is Mi? ? Crazy! ! Cut on Fri. and again tonight. Indian summer is all fine & good, but this is a bit much. Didn't cut for long both this evening or Fri. due to squadrons of mosquitoes making attack runs on me. But the weather man is say'n 80* again...

    Modded Stihl 046 power

My bad, thinking backwards last night. Compression would change not the displacement......
  15. O

    Modded Stihl 046 power

This is going to vary on almost each moded saw you see. Was the builders goal max RPM, or was it max torque? Take for example the cc's displaced. Depending on if the jugs been cut down or a very thin gasket/no gasket was used two saws will have different cc's of displacement depending on...

    Dolmar PS-5100 S on Order

I have the 5100 & it's a fine saw. Mine came set up with 18" bar & 3/8" chain, which is about as much B&C as I think it'll ever see. If the wood is larger enough to need more it also "needs" my MS460 as well. It'll wear a 16"X3/8" B&C when the 18" bar is shot. The 5100 is a much better...

    Cutting firewood and getting older....

A great topic, Wayne, I've been doing the same thing for a couple years, here is what I've done so far. Trailer as well as pickup. Load the smaller wood on the truck, nothing goes on the truck that needs to be split. Roll larger rounds onto the trailer via the drop down tailgate intended for...

    Got Firewood?

+1 Yep, at least into 1/3's. Macho is all fine and good within reason, but that is a bad back waiting to happen. That Husky on the tailgate would do that for you with ease, or a sledge hammer and wedges......

    New Fangled Central Boiler

A friend of mine has a 5036 CB & heats his home + 3 car garage/shop building with it, both well insulated. His sq. footage is only 5K sq. ft. and he uses about 6 cords of wood to heat both all winter. I've been looking at the newer CB that gasifies and it looks good, but not as good as this...

Firewood, how much $$ compared to last year?

A very interesting thread, A guy up the road is charging $80 for 1/3 cord & $225 for a full cord for mixed hardwoods. For pure oak however he charges $125 for 1/3 cord & $350 for full cord. Those were his prices last year anyway for him to bring it to you, havn't heard his prices for...
