    Saw fading on full throttle

I'm kind of new to saw repair. But so far so good. The most challenging so far has been a rebuild of a 200T that took a 70' fall onto rocks many many moons ago. It's got a new chain brake, new air cover filter, new fuel lines and a new fuel tank and fuel pickup. Everything has been cleaned...

What could cause literally half of a tree to die?

Hmm? It was awhile ago and I think the healthy side looked perfect, but I didn't examine to too closely. I can ask HO if that half of tree still looks OK.

Just cut it already! Dendrocidal maniacs (tree hacks)

What could cause literally half of a tree to die?

Saw this last year on a private job for a friend. Crab apple, and one half dead, other half looked fine. I think normally one would be looking for root problems as already suggested, but there were no changes to account for it. The gas line to the house ran through the zone and I have always...

    Volcano Mulching - that bad?

John Continue to be a mulch Nazi! This practice is really taking off here too. One service can blow the mulch right into your garden from the street and people think the more the better. Also once a landscaper has delivered a bunch in a regular truck, he's not gonna take any back if he's...

    buckingham Black widow saddle.

I could easily be wrong but I think this one was designed as a competition saddle. Not that it couldn't be used for tree work too. But I saw it once and remember it being quite light and non-bulky. It sure looked nice.

using closed system hitch for removal

Didn't quite catch all the details, hard to follow. You mean you tie yourself in and work off a closed system? For removals? Why not? I do, and lots of other people do. Regular climbing rope (I use a VT hitch, but same idea) and a lanyard. two points of tie-in. Nothing odd about it at all.

to stake, or not to stake, that is the question...

Like these? One fell, and we removed the other. In my opinion the root ball never developed sufficient lateral roots because the cage and burlap were never removed or even cut partly away. If the tree could be saved I wuld also recommend looking at the roots and addressing why there was a...

BCMA - last minute study tips

Hey Arbutus I suspect that you mean ISA Certified Arborist, and not Board Certified Master Arb. That is a different certification altogether. Sounds like you have covered stuff. I made the effort to get some of the texts via interlibrary loan when I studied. You don't really need to but it...

You Know you are a Hack when...

Drove past a bunch of guys - ladder on top of the chip truck box which was leaned against a spruce tree. The guy on the ladder was re-shaping the spruce with a chainsaw- one handed of course. I SO wish I had a video cam.

    Climbing Harness/Saddle Q&A???

Saddles, ropes and lanyards for tree work are for tree access and work positioning, not fall arrest I have heard that you can do serious damage to your pelvis and back falling even 15 feet in your saddle, even if you come nowhere near hitting the ground or part of the tree. Arborist ropes are...

    First tree removal job

You might need to order that one. It's inexpensive though. You could order it from Amazon or from ISA. It would probably cost a little more from ISA if you are a non-mmember.

    Oh, I'm a fence crusher

Sounds like you are freaked out more by the fact that you can't reconstruct the subte signs and feelings that normally accomany any task, rather than by what turned out to be, on the scale of tree work, a fairly small thing. This would freak me too. I would wonder about my mind. But it happens...

    First tree removal job

Good feeling isn't it! You might want to invest a couple of bucks on Jeff Jepson's newish book "To Fell A Tree". It's full of useful techniques. Consider using an open face notch, and bore cuts both sides when the bar is too short to make a normal back cut.

    Oh, I'm a fence crusher

I know what you mean. Even if I have seen it's clear and I have been looking in the mirrors I still think some Smart Car or worse, some little kid on a trike has somehow materialized there.

TreeMotion saddle vs. Weaver Couger; underdog winner??

My saddle is comfortable, will probably outlast a nuclear event and I can hang enough crap from it to spend a weekend in a tree. But it weighs 9 pounds, and when I add the gear, saw, boots and all the other stuff I wear in a tree - suddenly i'm no lightweight any more. My next saddle will be...

    Killed some rats

Just got back from Hawaii. Great trees there. There are no snakes. A gazillion very awesome types of spiders though! I like spiders. And Koa is an endemic and endangered native Hawaiian tree. just stuff I learned last week.

    Kill Box Elder w/o Roundup?

I throw my vote in with grind. If any boxelders are supposed to remain, they may be root grafted to the stumps and therefore poisoned. Even if remaining trees are scheduled for removal they may be compromised and made dangerous before the jobs are completed.

    Anyone uses cambium savers?

another positive Our crew uses them most of the time - the ring type, more for pruing than removals but handy for both. Not only do they save the tree, they make it much easier to ascend or hoist yourself around in the tree. They save the rope too, big time. Get a rope retriever to pull out...
