    Elm

A beautiful wood I milled up a 30" American elm 15 years ago and am using it now. My old delta planer hates it. The grain lifts some. If I had a helix head planer this would not be an issue

    Length of logs to mill

I cut my logs at 6'3" to fit in the bed of my truck. Easier to carry. As a weekend woodworking warrior, I rarely use anything over 4'. Also I don't cut to sell You should of mentioned the diameter of the tree. In the first picture the tree looks like it is 15" in diameter. On the truck it...

    Impromptu GTG for milling

Probably a really dumb question. What if the chain breaks in the cut. The chain will still be driving thru the sprocket and the first thing the chain will contact out of the cut will be your leg. In the middle of the cut that chain would be stopped in by board and log but when starting the...

    Salvaged walnut cookies

I would cut cookies for a friend and he would use them for dear racks mounts. I would use end grain sealer from woodcraft to slow the drying down. Chris

    apple tree's

Looking good. We used to thin 9"-12" apart. I remember getting yelled at by my grandpa for under thinning. The people that bought our farm don't thin at all. They sell marbles!!! Chris

    Is a ms660 or 661 a good milling saw?

Your diehard!!! At least you probaly weren't sweating. I am by no means ripping on your milling. In the video it looks like you are sawing uphill. Maybe it is just the angle that you are filming at. Chris

    Saw choice

"I use a 660 for milling and bucking. It's a little small for milling and a little big for bucking" I agree with this. I would really like a +100cc saw for milling. I use the 044 with 25"b/c for felling/bucking

    I hate sanding!

klingspor sterate sandpaper. I have been using this stuff for +15 years. Best that I have used. I would take my glued up panels to a local cabinet shop to get sanded on a large belt sander to say 80 grit. I then use a palm sander with 80,150,220 grits. Chris

Old pictures at the apple orchard

I found some old picture of me and pictures I took of the farm from up in the lift. These pictures were taken in between 1998-2000 based on what trees I see cut down. My family had an apple orchard from 1925-2000. 16 acres and around 2500 trees. would produced around 5000-7000 bushel a year...

    Any apple growers?

I always tell friends with apple trees that the tree will probably grow the same amount of mass of apples. Whether you have a 1000 small apples or 100 large apples. Which sell better or are easier to peel for pies.

    Any apple growers?

Looking good!!! From talking with hobby apple growers, very few know what thinning is. My family had an apple orchard from 1925-2000. 16 acres and around 2500 trees. would produce around 5000-7000 bushel a year. Small compared to some orchards. I miss it almost everyday. I don't miss...

    next milling project is walnut

I would position the log so the blade runs parallel to your crack. I have milled a few walnut logs and the end grain seems to be harder than say oak or cherry. More vibration in the mill. It is beautiful wood though. Happy milling Chris
