Hackberry vs. Mulberry--Time for a Judgment Call.

I've never burned mulberry, but have burned a lot of hackberry. The only problem I've seen, is that the hackberry will get punky real quick if left on the ground. I'd season it this summer and plan on burning it this winter, it should dry well enough if split. Mine that is over 2 yrs old is...

what size jonsered do I want?

My woodburning story is much like yours. I got back to it 3 yrs ago. I had previously cut almost all of my firewood with an old 610 mac. It still works perfectly, and I still use it about once a yr. I bought a 2165 about 4 yrs ago mostly for firewood. It is a very nice machine. Much faster and...

    does elm mold easily?

I have burned a lot of elm, but it does smell bad and cure slowly. Like the poem says, B eechwood fires are bright and clear If the logs are kept a year, Chestnut's only good they say, If for logs 'tis laid away. Make a fire of Elder tree, Death within your house will be; But ash...

Question about hydraulic oil for splitter

Dextron is a hydraulic oil, an automatic transmission used hydraulics to operate it's clutches. Dextron has a lot of detergents and additives that you don't need in a log splitters hyd system. I would just use a lo cost hyd oil that can be found at any local farm supply store. Keep moisture from...

    Who is still burning

I let it go out around the end of March, lit it backup on the 9th of Apr, hasn't been out since. It's been between 20 and 50 since then with quite a bit of snow too.

    Truck gearing question.

I like the 4.10 or 4.30s a lot more than the 3.73s. The difference isn't much, but I can tell, more so when towing things. If you do switch gears, it would be a good time to put in trutrac or some kind of limited slip or locker too.

I agree, although I use imgur, these sites make posting pics much easier and faster than the forum's method.

    Johnsered 2165

Is that a brand new one? I bought a new 2165 in 2007 for $509. I know that they have increased in price, but don't know what is really the lo end for a new saw. I really like it, it's my go to saw.

    Elm

Elm in general isn't considered a good firewood, but I've burned quite a bit of American, and some Siberian. The American is much better than the other. I don't like the smell, and it takes a long time to season. I try to stay away from it, but will take some if it's handy and close by.

    Pro Mac 610

The first saw that I bought with my own money was a 610 in 1981. I was 15. That saw cut 100's of cords of firewood and all kinds of other cutting. It still sits in my shop ready to go. Every nowandthen I fire it up and cut a little. The sound still gets to me. They aren't fast or light, but...

It's Gonn'a Suck North of Me

I'm in the 6-10" range, with rain, ice, snow forcast for just south of me. I hope the power stays on because I'm an electrician. Most people don't ever run there gensets ever until it's "lights out, and then what should I do now?"

    Two days no fire.

I let mine go out for about a dayandahalf. Lit er back up tonight though, lo of 15 tonight. I've got about 1/2 cord in the basement, might be enough for this year if it stays nice. I still want to ride the snowmobile a few more miles, but we'll need more snow to get that done. It's getting a...

    Stump removal techniques? Need advice

I would use one of these things, but I guess that's because I own one. There are a lot of ways to get rid of stumps, none are easy and cheap.
