    Winterizing an 028

True that, I went all of July without building a fire in the wood stove.

    What wood burns hottest?

Eastern Hophornbeam (Ironwood) burns hotter than coal.

    In over my head....... HELP!!!!!!

I live in a very old farm house as well and no upstairs heat also. I guess they figured heat rises and big open space where stairs go up for heat to rise. Surprisingly it really does warm up nice up there if you leave all the bedroom doors open. I did put some small electric baseboard heaters in...

    Winterizing an 028

Put away for winter? I'm just getting ready to take mine out of summer storage. I hate cutting wood if it is over 60°

    28 ton splitter spool valve?

I got the new valve in my first post last week and installed it yesterday. It was a perfect match for my speeco 28 ton splitter and works like a charm, no more leak. I run atf and even a small leak gets expensive. The auto return detent feels a lot better than with the valve it originally came...

    28 ton splitter spool valve?

That same company Tool-Tuff makes a identical valve same price with reverse ports for some other splitters but this is the one they say fits Speeco splitters. I decided to give it a try I will report back when I get it. I like the idea of the adjustable kick out, the detent on my old leaking one...

    28 ton splitter spool valve?

Ok I have a Speeco split master 28 ton splitter the spool valve has been leaking since day one. I was dragging my feet and never sent in for warranty. Anyway I found this valve on ebay at half the price speeco wants with free shipping. I wonder if anyone has tried this valve? Is it any good...

    You burning yet?

I'm sure I will be building a fire as soon as I get home from work tonight. 55°f now with rain and 18 mph wind gusting to 25 mph and going down in the 40's tonight. The high tomorrow is forecast to be 48°

    You burning yet?

Yes on about my 3rd or 4th fire so far. Not really very cold yet but with rain and upper 40's and low 50's the house was chilly.

    Propane

Buy yourself a bigger tank a 250 gallon. They charge more per gallon to fill a 20# through 100# tank, I don't think they will even come out unless it is a $200 minimum fill just to roll a truck.

    Who ports saws?

Sure the 372 cuts a log a few seconds faster than the 359, my point was for the average guy is 3 or 4 seconds per cut worth the money? There is nobody else around I am trying to impress.

    Who ports saws?

I had my 372xp ported, but imo for the average wood cutter if you do a good muffler mod and get the squish to around .020" unless you are actually racing the saw, a muff mod and squish is all you need. As a home firewood cutter 10 - 15 cords a year. I don't think I would waste my money on a port...

    Propane

I paid .89 cents per gallon and I lease the 500 gal. tank but they waive the lease fee as long as I fill once a year. That is why I went to a 500 gallon tank from a 250 gallon tank. I only need to fill up once a year in about July when prices are usually at the lowest. Yea I remember a few years...

    fuel mix

No the muffler does not get oily. Btw I run Motul 800 2T Factory Line I can barely smell the smoke and the smoke smell is the reason I run the Motul. Not a obnoxious smell such as the Sthil oil.

    fuel mix

I have to be different I run 36:1 fully synthetic. I buy it by the liter and measure it out myself with a graduated cylinder. It is every bit as low cost as running store bought sthil or husky oil at 50:1

    Propane

The log trucks here stack 8 footers sideways usually a 10 or 12 cord load. It is really supposed to be 96" they just call it 100 " I guess if a guy wants to cut it up into 8 ft boards it is nice to have a couple inches on each side to spare thus 100"

    Propane

I will keep the wood stove burning 24/7 in winter but with these prices I don't mind the furnace kicking in once in a while and not have the stove burning full bore when it is really cold.
  18. Coldfront

    Propane

I just called to get my 500 gallon propane tank filled, @ .89 cents per gallon, not bad. 100" log loads are still going for $100 per cord. I will burn the furnace more again this year, as long as propane is cheaper than wood. I still burn as much free wood as I can. Anyway now is the time to get...

Covering/securing firewood in bed of truck during transport.

I have a 2004 F150 if I put side boards on I would probably break something. A full load of oak without side boards is a heck of a load by itself. If you need to haul more a trailer is the way to go. Honestly I have never seen anyone secure a pickup truck load of wood, stack it full but not so...
