I have the same digital caliper - I got it free wtih a bearing order and I use it all the time.

My first guess was lube related but the more I thought about it, I figured the piston would be the weak link to no lube. And if I find a crank to put in it, I want to rule out any other culprits.

If it were mine, I would - Rebuild the carb ($7 to $10) - New fuel / impulse lines ($15 to $20 for both) - upgrade the coil as Fish is hinting to ($25 to $35) With a few $$ and help from this site, you could have a top quality back up saw that will last another life time...:)
